H-K Wrestling Sends Several to the Open; Boys’ Hockey, Hoops Ready for Playoffs

The Haddam-Killingworth wrestling team had plenty of representation at the State Open Championship that took place at the Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 22-23. The Cougars finished in a tie for 38th place with 20 points scored at the meet.

One week after winning a Class S state title, Aiden Maher wrestled in the 220-pound weight class at the State Open. Maher lost to DJ Donovan of Danbury by pin at the 51-second mark of his opening bout. In his next match, Maher scored a win by pin against Adam Frame of Brookfield at the 1:50 mark. Maher then lost a 6-5 decision versus Branford’s Minsok Lee in his final bout.

Ben William competed in the 120-pound division at the Open. Williams lost a 16-6 decision against Abhi Bhabad of Avon and then won by a 5-2 score over Connor Devega of Norwich Free Academy. William later took a pinfall loss to Jack Ryan of Trumbull in 33 seconds. Cameron Hines (106) earned a 9-0 decision versus Zachary Kanaitis of RHAM, after which he took a 16-5 loss to Trent Thompson from Bristol Eastern. Hines came back to win a 9-0 decision over Nick Faraci of Rocky Hill. In his last match, Hines lost a 2-1 decision against Glastonbury’s Cody Giaccone.

Nicholas Glynn (145) defeated Ben Leblanc of Danbury by an 8-2 final and then pinned Chris Rivera of East Catholic in 1:58. Glynn went on take a loss by pin against Raul Mateo of Manchester at the 3:32 mark. Thomas Perry (285) pinned Jerel Pollard of Windsor in 1:01, before losing to Jordan Agosto of Danbury by pin at 1:32. Perry pinned Barlow’s Anthony Martinez in 2:47 and later lost to Jacob Rizy from Staples by pin at the 1:00 mark. Wyatt Wright competed in the 132-pound weight class, while Matt Carson wrestled in the 182-pound division for the Cougars at the Open.

Ice Hockey

Lyman Hall/H-K/Coginchaug finished the regular season at 14-6 and now begins the postseason.

The Trojans won a 7-5 final over Joel Barlow-Weston-Abbott Tech on Feb. 17. Then on Feb. 23, they earned a 4-1 victory against East Haven-Old Lyme-Old Saybrook-East Hampton-Morgan-Valley Regional in their regular season finale.

The Trojans will compete in the SCC/SWC Division III State Tournament this week, playing a semifinal game at Milford Ice Pavilion on Wednesday, Feb. 27. A win there puts the Trojans in the championship game at Bennett Rink at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 1.

Boys’ Basketball

H-K lost a 50-48 decision versus Westbrook on Feb. 18. Three days later, the Cougars took a 62-53 defeat against East Hampton to finish the regular season with a record of 8-12. H-K now prepares for the Division V State Tournament, which opens up with first-round play on Tuesday, March 5.
