Junior Grace Hanratty took first place in the 1,000-meter run when the Old Saybrook girls’ indoor track team sent a handful of athletes to compete at the State Open Championship at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 16. The Rams scored 16 points to finish in three-way tie for ninth place with Canton and Windsor at the meet.

Hanratty recorded a time of 2:58.14 in the 1,000 to beat out runner-up Cassandra Carleson of Plainfield, who ran a time of 3:00.41. Hanratty’s gold medal performance earned Old Saybrook 10 points toward its team tally at the meet. Hanratty had previously placed first in the 1,000 at the Class S State Championship, where she finished in 2:58.03 to top Carleson’s mark of 3:02.99.

Additionally at the State Open, senior Jessica Stratton scored four points for the Rams in the 1,000 by taking fourth place with a time of 3:03.18. Old Saybrook’s 1,600 sprint medley relay of junior Allison Cody, Dylan Adams, Stratton, and Hanratty finished in fifth place at 4:22.34, scoring two points.

Cate Coppes’s height of 9 feet-6 inches in the pole vault earned her ninth place in the event. Rachel Vigorita came in 12th place in the high jump with a height of 5 feet. The Rams’ 4x800 relay squad of Tehra Givehand, Emily Stratton, Caitlin Wiley, and Julia Sultini finished 17th with a time of 10:38.77.

Girls’ Basketball

Old Saybrook closed out its 2018-’19 campaign by earning a 59-16 home victory against Hale-Ray on Feb. 15. The Rams, who also took a loss to East Hampton, finished the year with a record of 3-17. The week also saw senior captain Mandy Beck play her final game with Old Saybrook to cap off an impressive four-year career.

On Feb. 11, Old Saybrook turned in its best performance of the season versus East Hampton, but took a narrow 42-39 defeat on the road. Old Saybrook matched East Hampton basket for basket in the first quarter and held a 14-13 lead, although Bellringers had the edge in the second quarter to take a 21-15 advantage at halftime. After a relatively even third quarter, East Hampton took a 10-point lead early in the fourth. Sophomore Abby Bergeron found the mark on a pair of 3-pointers, while Beck also hit a three to bring the Rams within a point.

The Bellringers increased their lead to 38-35, after which back-to-back buckets from sophomores Priscilla Gumkowski and Jenna Tully put the Rams ahead 39-38. East Hampton went back up by three points late in the game. Old Saybrook had one final possession with 1.5 seconds left, but couldn’t convert on the potential game-tying 3-pointer. Beck led all scorers with 17 points to go along with eight rebounds, five assists, two blocks, and four steals. Junior Taylor Cote also had eight rebounds, while Bergeron scored six points.

On Feb. 15, Old Saybrook defeated Hale-Ray by a 59-16 final to end the season on a high note. The Rams scored 19 consecutive points in the first quarter and cruised to a 43-point win. In her last game as a member of the Rams, Beck turned in a 15-point performance, before leaving the game to a nice ovation early in the third quarter. All 13 players for the Rams saw time on the floor in the victory. Cote and Gumkowski had eight points apiece, while sophomore Kayla Holt added six points for Head Coach Steve Woods’s squad.
