Maher Takes 220 Title as H-K Places 3rd in States

Wrestling

Senior Aiden Maher claimed the state title in the 220-pound weight class to help the Haddam-Killingworth wrestling team finish in third place at the Class S State Championship. The Cougars scored 162 points at the state meet, which took place at Windham High School on Feb. 15 and 16.

Maher took the 220-pound title when he defeated Ben Foligno of St. Paul on a pin just 23 seconds into their championship clash. For Maher’s road to the final, he defeated Portland’s Ashton Oakliff (pin at 0:29), Kolt Maccracken of Montville (pin at 0:28), and Gilbert’s Barjum Gutic (by 15-1 decision).

Matt Carson finished third in the 182-pound division after defeating Elijah Pasternack of Gilbert by pin at the 2:25 mark in the third-place bout. Ben Williams finished third at 120 after beating Cooper Barrett of Somers on a 12-0 decision. Cam Hines took third in the 106 division by scoring a 4-3 decision over Ethan Titus of Canton. In the 285-pound bracket, Thomas Perry claimed third place for H-K by pinning Nole Snieckus of Northwestern at the 58-second mark. Wyatt Wright finished fifth at 132 after besting Seymour’s Anthony Deicicchi on a pin in 43 seconds. Nicholas Glynn finished sixth at 145 after losing a 3-2 decision to Zack McLellan of Gilbert.

Also competing H-K at states were Ethan Wright (113), Matt Pray (126), Sam Young (138), Jacob Young (160), and Ian Danaher (170).

Boys’ Basketball

H-K qualified for the Division V State Tournament last week and now has a record of 8-10.

The Cougars dropped a 77-48 final against Cromwell on Feb. 13. Two days later, H-K sealed its spot in the postseason spot by earning a 66-57 victory over North Branford.

Girls’ Basketball

H-K lost a contest to Cromwell last week to finish its season with a record of 3-17. On Feb. 11, the Cougars took a 71-28 defeat versus Cromwell in their final game of the year.

Ice Hockey

The Lyman Hall/H-K/Coginchaug ice hockey team moved to 12-6 overall after taking two recent defeats.

The Trojans lost an 8-5 contest against Branford on Feb. 13. Then on Feb. 16, they dropped a 5-1 decision versus Sheehan.
