Girls’ Basketball

The Guilford girls’ basketball team had a packed week that saw the Indians complete their regular season and then compete in the Southern Connecticut Conference Tournament.

The Indians took a 50-49 overtime defeat against Cross on Feb. 11. Cross led by 11 entering the fourth quarter, but the host Indians outscored the Governors 19-8 during the final frame to force overtime. In the OT period, Cross had the ball for the final possession, drew a foul as time expired, and then hit a free throw to come away with the one-point win. Elle Petra paced Guilford with 13 points, while Janie Danaher added 10. Moira Kellaher tied a season high by grabbing nine steals.

On Feb. 13, Guilford posted a 54-46 win versus Morgan to finish the regular season at 9-11. Guilford opened the night with its usual 2-3 zone defense and held a 22-18 lead at halftime. The Indians stepped up the tempo with an aggressive man-to-man defense in the second half, but the host Huskies hung tough, and the game was tied at 44 midway through the fourth. Petra and Kellaher, who were both in foul trouble, came back into the game and helped Guilford close out the contest with a 10-2 run to secure the victory. Danaher scored 14 points, and Petra had 10 points.

The next day, the 10th-seeded Indians dropped a 39-34 decision at No. 7 seed Amity in the first round of the SCC Tournament. Amity built a 25-20 lead at intermission, but the Indians tightened up on defense on the second half, and were only down by two with three minutes left following a 3-pointer from Miabella Diaz. The Spartans responded with a basket and then hit another one following a miss by Guilford to push the lead to six on their way to the win. Danaher led Guilford with 12 points, while Lauren Cunneen snared seven rebounds.

Guilford, which has an overall record of 9-12, will open the Class L State Tournament with a first round game on Monday, Feb. 25.
