Old Saybrook’s Track Teams Earn Runner-Up Honors in Class S State Championship

Old Saybrook’s boys’ and girls’ indoor track teams posted second-place finishes at the Class S State Championship that was held at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 7. The boys’ squad scored 58.25 points to earn runner-up honors, while the girls’ team recorded 48 points to take second place. Bloomfield won the title on both the boys’ and girls’ sides.

The Old Saybrook boys were coming off a second-place showing at the Shoreline Conference Championship when they competed in the Class S meet. At states, the Rams’ best individual performance of the day came from junior Cooper Luciani, who took first place in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:26.95, beating out Ellis Phillips-Gallucci of Windham (1:27.30) for top honors. In the 4x800 relay, Old Saybrook’s team of junior Luke Hanratty, junior Shon Ryan, sophomore Jacob Schneider, and Luciani grabbed the gold medal by running a time of 8:22.90, outpacing the unit from East Hampton (8:27.55).

Old Saybrook saw all four of its relay teams score points at the state meet. The 4x200 of junior Jack Colella, and seniors Carlos Chacon, Devon Moshier, and Max Thomas earned third place (1:36.14); the 4x400 of Hanratty, Luciani, Thomas, and Colella also came in third (3:36.38); and the 1,600 sprint medley relay of Moshier, Chacon, Thomas, and Ryan placed fifth with a time of 3:52.58.

Hanratty also claimed third place in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:27.48. In the pole vault, junior Cody DeAngelo finished in second place by clearing a height of 13 feet for Old Saybrook. DeAngelo’s distance was one foot higher than when he cleared 12 feet to place second at the Shoreline Conference Championship on Feb. 2.

Other notable performances for the Rams included Colella’s seventh-place time of 36.98 seconds in the 300-meter dash, Landis Twomey’s 21st-place performance with a toss of 39 feet-10.5 inches in the shot put, and Chacon’s 22nd-place showing in the long jump (18-4.75).

The Old Saybrook girls’ team came into states after recently claiming its third straight title at the Shoreline Conference Championship. In the Class S competition, the Rams were led by first-place finishes from juniors Grace Hanratty and Cate Coppes. Hanratty claimed first place in the 1,000 with a time of 2:58.03 to defeat Cassandra Carleson of Plainfield (3:02.99). Coppes captured the crown in the pole vault by clearing a height of 11 feet to beat out runner-up Carolyn Cumello of Coginchaug (9-6).

The Rams also saw second-place finishes from two of their relay squads. The 4x800 quartet of junior Allison Cody, freshman Caitlin Wiley, senior Tehra Givehand, and sophomore Emily Stratton finished second with a time of 10:13.18. The 1,600 sprint medley relay featuring sophomore Dylan Adams, junior Autumn Szucs, Cody, and senior Jessica Stratton took second at 4:23.18.

Senior Rachel Vigorita placed second in the high jump with a height of 4 feet-10 inches for Old Saybrook. Jessica Stratton posted a third-place finish in the 1,000 (3:08.14). Sophomore Anna Sumby took fourth place in the pole vault with a height of 7-6, and Coppes finished fifth in the 55 hurdles with a time of 9.37 seconds. Wiley notched a sixth-place finish in the 3,200 (12:15.57), while Brodeur earned sixth place in the high jump by clearing 4-8. The Rams’ 4x400 relay team of Hanratty, Jessica Stratton, freshman Anna Brodeur, and Cody came in sixth place with a time of 4:28.07.

Additionally, Elizabeth Mariol finished eighth in the shot put with a throw of 31 feet. Sumby took ninth place in the long jump with a distance of 15-3.25, while Vigorita’s leap of 12-11.5 earned her 23rd place in the same event. Julia Sultini took 17th place in the 1,600 with a time of 5:57.63. The 4x200 relay team of freshmen Avery Nosal, Mackenzie Kaap, Ashlyn Korpak, and Isabella LaMotte finished 24th in a time of 2:02.75.
