Old Saybrook Boys’ Hoops Hits Double Digits; Beck Honored on Senior Night

Boys’ Basketball

The Old Saybrook boys’ basketball team won two of its three games last week to improve to 10-5 on the year. The Rams lost to Amistad, but promptly bounced back by notching victories versus Capital Prep and Portland.

On Feb. 5, Old Saybrook hosted Amistad and dropped a 59-49 decision. The Rams got out to an early 20-11 lead in the first quarter, but Amistad narrowed Old Saybrook’s advantage to 25-23 by halftime. After three quarters, Amistad held a 40-35 lead that it would not relinquish the rest of the way.

Davis Brown posted 22 points with three rebounds, while Shane Henderson scored 19 points for Old Saybrook. Kameron Baker added eight points and six rebounds.

Two days later, the Rams scored a 54-46 home victory over Capital Prep. It was a tight game throughout with Old Saybrook leading 22-19 at halftime and 34-32 after three quarters. Old Saybrook secured the win over the Trailblazers on the strength a 20-14 fourth-quarter advantage. Henderson led the scoring attack with 28 points to go along with three rebounds and one assist. Paddy Ryan scored seven points, while Baker corralled seven rebounds. Brown scored eight points and had three boards.

The next day, the Rams headed to Portland and picked up a 59-47 victory. Old Saybrook took a 14-11 edge after the first quarter and then added three points to its lead during each subsequent frame to get the 12-point win. Henderson had 23 points with three rebounds, and Brown added 13 points with three boards. Dan Cote provided four points and six rebounds for the Rams. Mike Almada scored 11 points—all in the fourth quarter—to go with two assists and two rebounds in the win.

Girls’ Basketball

The Rams dropped two competitive games against Portland and Morgan last week. Old Saybrook has a record of 2-16 with two contests left in the regular season.

On Feb. 7, the Rams hosted their Senior Night game against Portland and took a 47-29 defeat. Old Saybrook stayed in the game and was only down by four heading into the fourth quarter. However, Portland was able to pull away in the final frame and come away with the victory.

Prior to the game, Old Saybrook honored senior captain Mandy Beck as part of the team’s Senior Night festivities. Beck had a major impact in the contest by recording eight steals, eight rebounds, and four assists. Sophomores Kayla Holt and Priscilla Gumkowski both scored eight points.

Two days later, the Rams took a 56-42 defeat at Morgan. Old Saybrook got out to an early 15-10 lead in the first quarter thanks to the success of its press and some solid long-range shooting from Beck and Gumkowski. The Huskies answered with their own hot shooting in the second quarter and took a three-point lead into the half. After a back-and-forth third quarter, the Huskies were up 40-34 heading into the final frame. Morgan added to its lead in the fourth en route to the 14-point victory. Beck scored 17 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and also played some stellar defense. Sophomore Abby Bergeron and Gumkowski each hit a trio of threes, while Holt also made a three.
