Bradley Grapples Way to SCC Title for Morgan; Girls’ Hoops Gets Two Out of Three

The Morgan wrestling team competed in the Southern Connecticut Conference Championship that was held at Jonathan Law High School on Feb. 9. The Huskies saw sophomore Louis Bradley take the SCC title in the 132-pound weight class by winning a 7-4 decision against Keldon LaRose of Guilford in the championship bout. The Huskies scored 29 points and finished in a tie for 12th place at the meet.

Bradley won four matches in his path to victory, beginning with a pin of Troy Larusso of Cheshire at the 1:42 mark in the first round. In the quarterfinals, Bradley pinned Cole Johnson of Amity at the 3:06 mark. Bradley then posted a 3-0 decision over Grant Barber of Middletown, before beating LaRose in the final.

Freshman Aiden McEnaney wrestled his way to two wins for Morgan at the SCC meet. McEnaney's first win came by pinfall in his opening bout, and his other victory came on an 18-13 in the consolation rounds. Senior Frank Jara-Torres won two matches in the 145-pound division. Jara-Torres's first win came by pinfall in his opening bout. The senior went on to pick up 9-1 decision in the consolation bracket. Fellow senior Kyle Neumann won his first match by pinfall in the 170 division.

Other Morgan wrestlers who competed in the meet included Kevin Hicks in the 113-pound weight class along with, Evan Baptista (120), John Fragola (126), Rex Smith (138), and Ryan Hromadka (160).

Girls' Basketball

Morgan grabbed a pair of wins and also took a loss last week to move to 13-5 with two games left in the regular season. Morgan earned wins versus North Branford and Old Saybrook to go with a defeat versus Cromwell.

On Feb. 4, Morgan scored a 56-42 win in North Branford. Morgan was up 23-21 at halftime and brought a 37-30 lead into the fourth quarter on its way to the victory. Sophomore Catie Donadio poured in 23 points to go with five rebounds, one block, two steals, and one assist. Junior Leah McComiskey had 13 points with eight boards and three blocks, while senior Becca Shamp added seven points and nine boards. Fellow senior Joelle Vuilleumier had eight points and seven rebounds.

Three days later, the Huskies lost a 59-27 home game against Cromwell. Donadio had 10 points with six rebounds, four steals, two blocks, and three assists; McComiskey had five points, two blocks, and seven rebounds; while senior Kylee Clifton contributed four boards, four steals, and two blocks.

On Feb. 9, the Huskies defeated Old Saybrook by a 56-42 final in a home game. Old Saybrook took an early 15-10 lead, but the Huskies battled back to grab a 26-23 advantage at the half. Morgan increased its lead to 40-34 in the third quarter and finished the night with the 14-point win. McComiskey led the Huskies with 18 points, nine rebounds, seven blocks, two steals, and four assists. Vuilleumier notched 12 points with six boards and two steals, while Shamp hauled in 12 rebounds. Rachel Lehn scored 11 points in the victory.

Boys' Basketball

The Huskies split two games by defeating North Branford and losing to Cromwell last week. Morgan's record is now 12-4 on the season.

On Feb. 5, Morgan hosted North Branford and notched a 65-38 victory. With the game tied 4-4, the Huskies scored 17 straight points and wound up cruising to their eighth consecutive win. Sophomore Zach Johnson led the way in scoring with a career-high 16 points for Morgan. Senior Garrett Johnson tallied seven points with three assists, while sophomore Jason Cohen had nine points by going 3-for-3 from downtown.

Three days later, the Huskies' win streak came to an end when they lost an 80-56 road game against an undefeated Cromwell squad. Morgan fell behind 25-10, but fought back to make it 35-34 at the end of the first half. With the score tied at 42-42 in the third quarter, Cromwell closed out the period on a 21-7 run en route to the 24-point win. Senior Chris Nuzzo had 22 points with two rebounds, and Johnson recorded 13 points, four rebounds, and three assists.

Girls' Indoor Track

The Huskies competed at the Class S State Championship at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 7. Morgan's top finish came from its 4x200 relay of Alyssa LeMay, Jessican Flanagan, Carley Schmidt, and Madison Corgan, who earned fifth place with a time of 1:53.39. This performance resulted in two points for the Huskies that put them in 26th place at the meet.

The Huskies' 4x400 relay of Erin Lindsay, Isabella Ranaudo, Colleen Edwards, and Corgan placed 10th with a time of 4:34.10. In the 1,600 sprint medley relay, the team of LeMay, Schmidt, Clara Franzoni, and Maura Kelly notched an eighth-place finish at 4:48.64.

LeMay placed 11th in the long jump with a leap of 14 feet-11.75 inches for the Huskies. Olivia McCray took 12th place in the 55 hurdles (10.14 seconds), and Sydney Church finished 15th (10.24). Edwards finished 20th in the shot put with a toss of 27 feet-6.5 inches. In the 300, Kayla Pollard finished 19th, (45.15), while Franzoni finished 26th (46.05) In the 55-meter dash, Kayla Pollard (28th, 8.01); Jessica Flanagan (40th, 8.14); and Carley Schmidt (46th, 8.24) competed for Morgan.

Boys' Indoor Track

Morgan sent several athletes to participate in the Class S State Championship on Feb. 7. The Huskies saw their 1,600-meter sprint medley relay (SMR) team of Bryce Thomas, Michael Savage, Calvin Jackson, and Chayse Lofgren take sixth place with a time of 3:54.06. The SMR scored a point for Morgan as the Huskies came in 26th place as a team.

Morgan's 4x400 relay of Ryan Caldwell, Lofgren, Paul Rodriguez, and Jackson finished seventh with a time of 3:43.25; while the 4x800 relay of Lofgren, Aiden Maurais, Justin Mucha, and Hayden Saranich took ninth place at 9:19.34. The 4x200 relay of Bryce Thomas, Ryan Caldwell, Michael Savage, and Ryan Warner finished 13th with mark of 1:39.53.

Thomas finished 15th in the 55-meter dash (6.84), and Michael Monty placed 14th in the 55 hurdles (8.71). Rodriguez took 14th place in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet-1.5 inches.
