H-K Boys’ Track Finishes 8th in States; Ice Hockey Stands at 12-4

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ indoor track team recorded a trio of third-place finishes on its way to finishing in a tie for eighth place at last week’s Class S State Championship. The Cougars totaled 18 points as a squad at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 7.

Matt Jennings led H-K by taking third place in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:41.95. The Cougars’ 4x800 relay Christian Uzwiak, Max Cozean, Seth Freeman, and Jennings also placed third by timing in at 8:36.84. In the pole vault, Tyler Knapp cleared a height of 11 feet-6 inches to earn a third-place finish.

Girls’ Indoor Track

The Cougars received two points from their 4x800 relay to finish tied for 26th place at the Class S State Championship last week. H-K’s quartet of Lauren D’Amico, Julia Callis, Hailey Cassidy, and Brianna Minervino finished with a time of 10:40.14 to come in fifth place at the meet.

Ice Hockey

The Lyman Hall/Haddam-Killingworth/Coginchaug ice hockey team stands at 12-4 after gaining a split of four recent matchups.

The Trojans took a 5-4 loss against North Branford on Feb. 2. Two days later, the team bounced back by earning an 8-1 victory versus Newtown. The Trojans followed up that win by defeating Amity 4-3 on Feb. 6. Three days after that, they dropped a 2-1 decision versus Watertown-Pomperaug.

Boys’ Basketball

The Cougars improved to 7-9 after winning two of three last week. H-K needs now needs one more win to make states this year.

H-K defeated Ellis Tech by the score of 66-32 in a non-conference matchup on Feb. 4. The next night, the Cougars took a 48-45 loss versus Coginchaug. H-K then bounced back by earning a 72-59 triumph over North Branford on Feb. 8.

Girls’ Basketball

H-K took three recent defeats and is 3-16 with one game to go in the regular season.

The Cougars lost a 64-45 decision against Coginchaug on Feb. 5. Two nights later, they dropped a 54-37 decision to North Branford. H-K finished the week by losing a 58-29 contest versus Old Lyme on Feb. 9.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Cougars took a 90-77 loss versus Suffield-East Windsor-Ellington-Windsor Locks on Feb. 8. H-K has a record of 3-4 this season.

Malone Revis claimed first place in the 200 individual medley (2:08.03) and the 100 breaststroke (1:06.18) for H-K. Kyle Mazziotti finished first in the 200 freestyle (1:55.16) and was second in the 100 backstroke (55.37). Eli Houlton won the 100 butterfly (57.14) and placed second in the 200 freestyle (1:56.55). Zach Houlton posted a first-place finish in the 500 freestyle (5:05.86) to go with a second-place performance in the 50 freestyle (23.88). Christo Garrelts came in second place for the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.24.

H-K’s 400 freestyle relay of Zach Houlton, Eli Houlton, Garrelts, and Mazziotti placed first (3:31.57), while the quartet of Nate Carlson, Colby Kish, Etienne Huebner, and Jonan Freeman took third (4:29.86). The Cougars’ 200 medley relay of Zach Houlton, Eli Houlton, Garrelts, and Revis placed second at 1:51.72. The 200 freestyle relay featuring Revis, Carlson, Freeman, and Garrelts also took second by recording a mark of 1:44.51.
