Senior Meredith Bloss took the title in the 3,200-meter run to lead the Guilford girls’ indoor track team at the Class L State Championship last week. The Indians came in 13th place by scoring 15 points as a squad at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 8.
Bloss claimed the 3,200 crown by posting a time of 11:25.92, defeating runner-up Rhiannon Richmond of Avon (11:33.49) by nearly eight seconds for top honors. Earlier in the postseason, Bloss finished first in the 1,600 and the 3,200 at the SCC East Sectional Championship and then won both of those events again at the SCC Championship.
Also at state meet, Sofia Migani finished tied for third in the high jump by clearing a height of 4-10 inches for Guilford. Gianna Siciliano took sixth place in the 1,600 by running a time of 5:30.65.
Girls’ Basketball
The Indians assured themselves a postseason berth by earning a nail-biting victory versus North Haven last week. Guilford has an overall record of 8-10 and finished with a mark of 4-4 in the SCC Quinnipiac Division this season.
Guilford defeated North Haven by a 40-36 final on Feb. 5 to clinch its spot in the SCC and Class L State tournaments. Guilford came out strong and held the host Indians to just 11 points in the first half, while establishing an 18-11 advantage at intermission. Guilford pushed the lead to 11 points in the third quarter, but North Haven kept the game close. Ultimately, Moira Kellaher converted on two critical free throws with 11 seconds remaining to seal both the win and a playoff bid for the Indians. Kellaher led all scorers with 13 points and also had a season-high nine steals. Sam Leiby added 10 rebounds off the glass.
On Feb. 8, the Indians took an 86-33 defeat against Hamden. Leiby knocked down a trio of 3-pointers in the first half as Guilford only trailed by nine at the break. However, Hamden scored 50 points during the second half and pulled away for the win. Leiby had 11 points, while Miabella Diaz chipped in with nine points for the Indians.
Boys’ Basketball
Guilford stands at 7-11 after winning one of its three matchups last week. The Indians, who are also 3-4 in the SCC Quinnipiac Division, need to win one of their last two regular-season games to guarantee themselves a spot in states.
The Indians took a 71-40 defeat against Notre Dame-West Haven on Feb. 5. Ian Slattery led Guilford with 18 points, and Colin Kellaher added 13 points on the night.
Two days later, Guilford took down Platt Tech by a 64-38 final in a non-conference contest. Jack Stanton scored 10 points, and Slattery had nine points.
The Indians completed their week by taking a 53-41 defeat versus Xavier on Feb. 8.
Boys’ and Girls’ Fencing
The Indians had another dominant week on the strip as both their boys’ and girls’ teams racked up a slew of victories to improve to 18-0 this year.
Guilford went up against Cheshire on Feb. 6. The boys’ team prevailed 24-3 following a trio of 8-1 wins in each discipline. The girls’ team won 18-9 after winning 5-4 for épée and 9-0 in foil to go with a 5-4 loss in sabre.
On Feb. 9, the Indians had a meet versus Hand, Fairfield, and Hopkins. Against Hopkins, the boys’ team won 19-8 with victories in épée (7-2), sabre (7-2), and foil (5-4). The girls posted a 25-2 victory with épée and foil both winning 8-1 and sabre earning a 9-0 sweep.
Facing Fairfield, the boys came out on top 22-5 as foil (6-3), épée (7-2), and sabre (9-0) all prevailed. The girls won 20-7 thanks to triumphs in épée (7-2), foil (5-4), and sabre (8-1).
Taking on Hand, the boys’ squad earned a 21-6 victory with wins in épée (8-1), sabre (8-1), and foil (5-4). The girls edged out the Tigers 15-12 by losing in épée (8-1), but prevailing in both foil (7-2) and sabre (7-2).
The boys’ sabre team’s sweep of Fairfield was led by a strong performance from Will Dinauer, who went undefeated on the day. Adella Cho and Shayla Flynn won all their bouts for the girls’ sabre squad. Lyndsey Smith went undefeated for girls’ foil, while Bailey Meyers had an undefeated day for the girls’ épée team.
In additional news, Guilford fencers Gracie Banning, Anna Angkatavanich, Evans Shultzes, Cho, and Smith will be competing at the Junior Olympics in Denver, Colorado later this month.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
Guilford moved to 8-9 on the year after losing two of three last week.
The Indians lost a 3-1 contest to West Haven-Sacred Heart Academy on Feb. 2. Olivia Gill scored the Indians’ goal on an assist by Maddie Epke.
On Feb. 5, Guilford doubled up Masuk-Barlow-Newtown-Lauralton Hall by the final score of 6-3. Epke netted three goals for a hat trick, while Jaime Neleber, Megan Fernandez, and Audrey Rowan also found the back of the net for the Indians. Epke also handed out two assists, and Gill added an assist in the victory. Julia McDonald and Morgan Mancuso shared the goalkeeping duties for Guilford.
The Indians finished the week by dropping a 3-2 overtime decision versus Branford-North Branford-Sheehan-Lyman Hall on Feb. 9.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The Indians lost two of three last week, but finished the week with a big victory versus Hand to move to 12-4 this winter.
Guilford took a 5-3 loss versus New Fairfield-Immaculate on Feb. 2. John DeLucia, Jack Dacey, and Connor Hagness netted the goals for Guilford, while Hagness, Shea Thibault, Tyler Considine, and EJ Vickerman had the assists on those scores. Guilford outshot New Fairfield-Immaculate by a 35-21 margin in the defeat.
On Feb. 6, the Indians dropped a 5-0 decision versus Branford.
Three nights later, Guilford faced off against Hand and prevailed 8-6. Dacey notched a hat trick with three goals and an assist, DeLucia had two goals and two assists, Jake Watrous added two scores and a helper, and Thibault scored an empty-net goal for the Indians.
