Blades Stay Hot with Two More Victories; North Haven Boys’ Swimming Prevails on Senior Night

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Amity-North Haven-Cheshire (A-NH-C) girls’ ice hockey team continued its strong second half of the season by winning two of its three matchups last week. The Blades have won eight of their last 11 games and stand at 8-10 overall with two games left in the regular season.

On Feb. 2, the Blades scored a 5-2 home win over Branford-North Branford-Sheehan-Lyman Hall in an SCC South Division showdown at Lou Astorino Ice Arena. The Blades scored three goals in the first period as senior Andrea DelVecchio, freshman Ilana Leyner, and senior Meaghan Hogan all found the back of the net. Senior Shannon Reilly and junior Haley Cable had the assists on the DelVecchio goal. After the Wings scored two goals in the second period, DelVecchio netted a pair of goals in the third to complete the hat trick and seal the 5-2 win. Reilly and Cable each had an assist on DelVecchio’s two goals, capping a three-helper night for both players. Senior Caitlyn Ranciato made 24 saves in goal for the Blades.

Then on Feb. 6, A-NH-C posted a 6-1 road victory versus divisional opponent Hand-Coginchaug-Old Lyme at Northford Ice Pavilion. Tess Csejka and Cable scored goals in the first period to give the Blades a 2-0 advantage. DelVecchio and Reilly assisted on the goal by Cable. A-NH-C made it 3-0 when Hogan scored an unassisted goal in the second period. DelVecchio scored two goals in the third period, after which sophomore Caroline Cadelina put home an unassisted goal to finish off the 6-1 victory. Ranciato stopped 16 shots to get another win in net.

Two days later, the Blades took an 8-1 loss against New Canaan in a non-conference game at Darien Ice Rink.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

North Haven played four games on the road last week and came away with a victory in the final game of the stretch by earning a 2-1 win versus North Branford. The Indians now have a record of 2-11-2 on the year.

On Feb. 2, North Haven took a 6-0 loss to Watertown-Pomperaug at Taft-Mays Rink. Four days later, the Indians dropped a 7-2 contest against West Haven at Bennett Rink. Then on Feb. 9, North Haven was back on the road to face Sheehan and dropped a 4-3 decision at Choate Rosemary Hall. The Indians finished off their week by posting a 2-1 victory against North Branford in a road game at Northford Ice Pavilion the following night.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

North Haven notched its third win in a row when the Indians earned a 93-80 home victory versus Foran-Law on Senior Night at Gawrych Town Pool on Feb. 5. North Haven improved to 4-5 overall and 4-1 in SCC Division II action with one meet remaining in the regular season. The Indians honored senior captains Will McCleery, JP Stoeffler, and Kevin Powers, as well as fellow seniors Tommy O’Connor and Tim Chin, as part of the Senior Night festivities at the meet.

Stoeffler claimed first place in both the 50 freestyle (23.04 seconds) and the 100 butterfly (58.07) to help North Haven defeat the Foran-Law co-op. Stoeffler recorded a lifetime-best time with his 58.07 in the butterfly. McCleery won the 100 backstroke with a lifetime-best mark of 57.32. Powers finished first in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.46), and sophomore Cameron Cargan was first for the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.84. In the 200 medley relay, North Haven’s unit of McCleery, Stoeffler, Powers, and Cargan finished first with a time of 1:51.73. The Indians’ 200 freestyle relay of sophomore Tanner Powell, Powers, junior Stephen Borrelli, and O’Connor recorded a time of 1:45.54 to take first place.

Numerous other athletes recorded lifetime-best performances for the Indians in their win. The swimmers who finished with lifetime bests included Powell in the 100 backstroke (1:13.09), Marco Criscola in the 200 individual medley (2:36.18), Ahmed Anwar in the 50 freestyle (39.48) and the 100 breaststroke (1:41.32); Kyle Borrelli (26.82), Joe O’Connor (27.55), and Chin (32.89) in the 50 freestyle; and Stephen Borrelli in the 100 freestyle (56.76).

On Friday, Feb. 22, North Haven is holding its annual Lion Heart Lap-a-Thon fundraiser in support of breast cancer research in conjunction with the swimming and diving teams from Amity, Hamden, and Lyman Hall-Coginchaug. The event, which is being held at Gawrych Town Pool from 3:15 to 4:30 p.m., will feature an hour of continuous sprint relays and exhibition diving. Girls’ Basketball

North Haven lost three games last week to move to 7-12 with one game remaining in the regular season. The Indians needed to win their regular-season finale versus Foran on Feb. 11 (after press time) in order to guarantee themselves a spot in the postseason this year.

North Haven took a 70-36 defeat at Hamden in an SCC Quinnipiac Division game on Feb. 2. Junior Mia Antonino scored 13 points for the Indians, while sophomore Sarah Puzone had 10 points on the night.

Two days later, the Indians dropped a 48-42 decision at Northwest Catholic in a non-conference contest.

Then on Feb. 5, North Haven hosted divisional opponent Guilford and lost by the final score of 40-26. North Haven held a 7-6 lead after the first quarter, but Guilford outscored North Haven in the second (12-4), third (12-8), and fourth (10-7) quarters to come away with the win. Sophomore Julia Bogen had eight points, while Puzone and freshman Evani Okwuosa scored six points apiece. Junior Laura Petrafesa added five points for the Indians.

The Indians completed their week with a home game against Quinnipiac opponent Shelton and took a 51-27 defeat to finish at 3-5 in the division. Shelton jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first quarter and increased its lead throughout the game. Antonino scored nine points for the Indians in the loss.

Boys’ Basketball

The Indians played a pair of games in SCC Housatonic Division action last week. North Haven took a defeat at Sheehan and then lost versus Lyman Hall in a home game. The Indians have an overall record of 5-12 and are 1-6 in the division this year.

North Haven opened up the week by losing an 82-56 decision at Sheehan on Feb. 5. The Indians were up 19-17 following the first quarter. However, Sheehan had the upper-hand in the second (17-5), third (30-16), and fourth (18-14) quarters and came away with the victory. Junior Dave Christoforo scored 19 points for North Haven. Senior Mike Collins had 10 points, junior Bryce Charney had six points, and fellow junior Jaden Watson also scored six points.

Three days later, the Indians hosted Lyman Hall and lost by the score of 59-37. Lyman Hall led 14-10 after the first quarter and held a 31-19 halftime advantage. The Trojans outscored North Haven 12-9 in the third quarter and 16-9 in the fourth to pull away for the win. Senior Jamorea Hooks scored 11 points, Collins scored nine, and Watson added six points for North Haven.
