Morgan Boys’ Hoops Boosts Win Streak to Seven; Track Teams Have Nice Showings at Shoreline Championship

Boys’ Basketball

The Morgan boys’ basketball team picked up victories against Haddam-Killingworth and Coginchaug in last week’s action. The Huskies are riding a seven-game win streak and also improved to 11-3 on the season.

On Jan. 29, Morgan hosted H-K and scored a 64-45 victory. The Huskies had recently defeated the Cougars 54-52 four days earlier. In this one, Morgan took control early with a 17-5 first quarter lead, but H-K closed in and trailed 26-19 at the half. The Huskies reasserted themselves in the second half, outscoring the Cougars 38-26 en route to the 19-point win. Garrett Johnson scored 24 points with three assists, while Paddy Murray and Zach Johnson netted eight points each.

Three days later, Morgan rallied for a 46-44 home win versus Coginchaug. After trailing 33-18 at halftime, the Huskies climbed back to within four points with 1:15 to play in regulation. After forcing a Coginchaug turnover, Zach Johnson’s 3-pointer cut the lead to 43-42 with less than a minute remaining. With 54 seconds to go, the Blue Devils only converted one of their two free throws, making it 44-42. AJ Fritz dropped in a runner from the lane and tied the game at 44-44 with 20 seconds left.

On Coginchaug’s final possession, Zach Johnson drew a charge with 4.8 seconds remaining to regain possession for the Huskies. Then, Garrett Johnson drove the length of the court and was fouled with 0.3 seconds to go. Johnson converted both free throws to give Morgan its first lead of the game at 46-44. Robbie Zirlis deflected Coginchaug’s inbounds pass to seal the Huskies’ seventh straight win. Chris Nuzzo had 16 points and four rebounds for Morgan. Garrett Johnson scored seven points to go with three rebounds and two assists.

Girls’ Basketball

The Huskies recorded a win over Haddam-Killingworth and took a loss against Coginchaug last week. Morgan now stands at 11-4 on the year.

On Jan. 28, Morgan earned a 57-38 victory at H-K to extended its win streak to six straight games. The Huskies brought a 24-20 lead into the half, before taking command with an 18-7 third quarter advantage. Leah McComiskey had 22 points, six rebounds, four blocks, four steals, and two assists to lead Morgan. Catie Donadio scored 17 points to go with three boards, two assists, two blocks, and one steal, while Joelle Vuilleumier added eight points, seven rebounds, one block, and two assists. Becca Shamp scored six points and also had nine boards, one block, and two steals. Kylee Clifton chipped in with four points with four steals and four assists.

Three days later, the Huskies headed to Durham and lost a 59-40 contest against Coginchaug. The Blue Devils took a 30-17 lead after the first half and led the rest of the game. Vuilleumier led Morgan in scoring with 12 points to go along with eight rebounds and two blocks. Shamp scored 10 points with four boards and a block. McComiskey notched six points and had five blocks, while Donadio had nine points, four blocks, five rebounds, four steals, and four assists.

Wrestling

Morgan squared off against Branford and dropped a 60-18 decision to the Hornets on Jan. 31.

Morgan’s Aidan McEnaney defeated Aidan Shamas of Branford by pinfall at the 40-second mark in the 106-pound division. At 132, Louis Bradley pinned Brenden Shamas at the 1:28 mark. In the 145 weight class, Frank Jara-Torres won a 7-5 decision against Austin Bui. Kyle Neumann notched a 4-0 decision against Spencer Lyon in the 170-pound bout.

Girls’ Indoor Track

Morgan competed at the Shoreline Conference Championship at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 2. The Huskies earned fourth place overall with a total of 52 points.

Colleen Edwards made the All-Shoreline Conference Second Team by taking second place in the shot put with a throw of 30 feet. The Huskies’ 4x200 relay team of Alyssa LeMay, Madison Corgan, Jessican Flanagan, and Carley Schmidt placed second at 1:53.20; while the 4x800 of Erin Lindsay, Isabella Ranaudo, Madison Emmi, and Maura Kelly also finished second (11:10.20), with both units earning Second Team accolades. Olivia McCray garnered All-Shoreline Honorable Mention by finishing third in the 55 hurdles (9.86 seconds). Sydney Church came in eighth place at 10.26.

In the 1,600 sprint medley relay, the team of LeMay, Kayla Pollard, Clara Franzoni, and Kelly earned Honorable Mention by finishing third with a time of 4:49.71. The 4x400 relay featuring Lindsay, Ranaudo, Corgan, and Edwards took fifth place by posting a time of 4:34.64. Lemay earned fifth place in the long jump at 15 feet-2.5 inches. Schmidt took sixth place in the 55 with a time of 8.01.

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Huskies came in eighth place in the Shoreline Conference Championship with 34 points scored.

Morgan’s 1,600 sprint medley relay of Mike Savage, Bryce Thomas, Calvin Jackson, and Chayse Lofgren took second place and made the All-Shoreline Conference Second Team by running a time of 3:53.81. The 4x200 quartet of Thomas, Ryan Caldwell, Ryan Warner, and Savage earned Honorable Mention by taking third with a time of 1:38.43. Thomas also placed fifth in the 55-meter dash at 6.93 seconds. The Huskies’ 4x400 relay of Caldwell, Lofgran, Paul Rodriguez, and Ryan Warner came in fourth place with a time of 3:46.27. In the 4x800 relay, Morgan’s grouping of Hayden Saranach, Aiden Maurais, Lofgren, and Justin Mucha finished fifth (9:08.76). Michael Monty took fifth place in the 55 hurdles (9.07), and Rodriguez claimed sixth place (9.18) in the event.
