Francois Has Big Day at SCCs for Yellowjackets; Girls’ Basketball Keeps Racking Up Victories

Girls’ Indoor Track

Sophomore Kisha Francois sprinted her way to a second-place performance in the 55-meter dash and took third in the long jump for the East Haven girls’ indoor track team at the Southern Connecticut Conference Championship on Feb. 1. The Yellowjackets scored 14 points and finished in 10th place at Floyd Little Athletic Center.

One week after winning the 55 at the SCC West Sectional Championship, Francois ran a time of 7.45 seconds to take second place and score eight points for East Haven at the conference meet. Ayesha Nelson, a senior from Hillhouse, won the event with a time of 7.33. Francois had advanced to the final of the 55 by placing second in the preliminary heat with a time of 7.47. Francois also scored six points in the long jump by finishing third with a leap of 16 feet-9.75 inches.

Freshman Morgan D’Auria and Emily Mazzucco also competed for the Yellowjackets. D’Auria placed seventh in the pole vault with a height of 6 feet-6 inches. Mazzucco finished seventh in the high jump by clearing 4-6 and ran a time of 45.97 seconds in the 300 to finish 13th.

Boys’ Indoor Track

East Haven saw four athletes compete at last week’s SCC Championship meet.

Senior Steve Johnson took eighth place in the long jump with a distance of 19 feet-2.50 inches for East Haven. Junior Nathan Santos reached 18-5 to earn 13th place in the event. Sophomore Radames Figueroa placed 10th in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.94 seconds. Senior Evan Damian finished 15th in the event by clocking in at 9.45.

Girls’ Basketball

The Yellowjackets recorded their 12th straight win and improved to 15-2 on the season after earning a trio of lopsided victories in SCC Oronoque Division action last week. East Haven also moved to 7-0 in divisional play with its wins versus West Haven, Lauralton Hall, and Lyman Hall.

On Jan. 28, East Haven visited West Haven and posted a 77-33 victory versus the Blue Devils. The Yellowjackets jumped ahead 35-20 at halftime and then put the game away by scoring 31 points in the third quarter. Senior captain Makenzie Helms scored 28 points, including six 3-pointers, while sophomore Taylor Salato had 17 points for the Easties. Junior Alexis Pendziwater added 10 points in the win.

The Yellowjackets returned home on Jan. 31 and topped Lauralton Hall by 60-32 final. East Haven held a 38-12 advantage at halftime and coasted to the win. Salato scored a game-high 17 points, while Pendziwater and Helms netted 11 points apiece. Junior captain Bella Ragaini scored two points and dished out 10 assists. Sophomore Angelina Munoz had nine points to go with 12 rebounds.

On Feb. 2, East Haven posted a 68-61 home victory versus Lyman Hall in an SCC Oronoque Division matchup.

Cheerleading

The East Haven cheerleading team competed in the SCC Championship that was held at North Haven High School on Feb. 2. The Yellowjackets totaled a score of 71.0 points to finish in eighth place in the All-Girl Division. North Haven won the title by posting a score of 87.05 at the meet. Hand finished first for the Co-ed Division with an 85.95.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The East Haven-Old Lyme-Old Saybrook-East Hampton-Morgan-Valley Regional boys’ ice hockey team took a 5-4 overtime loss against Hall-Southington at DiLungo Rink on Jan. 31. The Yellowjackets now have a record of 6-7-1 on the season.

East Haven was down 4-1 midway through the second period, but battled back to force overtime, where Hall-Southington won it by scoring with 1:38 to play. Old Lyme junior Alec Speirs, Valley Regional senior Ricky Persico, East Haven sophomore Dave Amatruda, and Morgan sophomore Ryan Egan all scored goals in the loss for the Yellowjackets, who saw East Haven sophomore Chad Feola get an assist.

Wrestling

East Haven took a 44-21 defeat versus Foran in its final home match of the season. The Yellowjackets moved to 19-5 on the year with the loss.

Sophomore Dominic Milano won by pin at the 1:37 mark of his 106-pound bout. Senior Victor Garcia prevailed on a pin at the 3:02 mark of his matchup at 113. Sophomore Matt DiVito earned a 7-4 decision victory at 120, junior Alec DiVito won via a 9-5 decision at 132, and junior Fabricio Bugatti was victorious by a 6-4 decision in the 152-pound weight class.
