Hand’s Boys’ 4x200 Relay Takes SCC Crown; Girls’ Hoops Solidifies Spot in States

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Hand boys’ indoor track team was bolstered by a first-place performance from its 4x200 relay and came in fourth place as a team at the Southern Connecticut Conference Championship on Feb. 1. The Tigers scored 45 points to claim fourth place at Floyd Little Athletic Center.

Hand’s 4x200 relay team of Ameen Parks, Braeden Kosiewicz, Josh Stewart, and Carson Hines posted a time of 1:34.32 to beat out Shelton (1:36.13) for the top spot at the SCC meet. The Tigers’ 4x400 relay of Connor Parthasarthy, Corey Duncanson, Greyson McGeary, and Hines finished second (3:34.13) to Hillhouse (3:30.35). The 1,600 sprint medley relay team of Kosiewicz, Ryley Brohel, Hines, and Parthasarthy came in third place (3:48.06). Hand’s 4x800 relay of Drew Carone, Max Genther, Lukas Kraemer, and Besufekad Opstrup finished fifth (8:50.32).

Elsewhere, Parks placed fourth for the 55-meter dash (6.73 seconds), before claiming fifth place in the 300 (36.27). Bryce Myers finished third for the pole vault by clearing 12 feet, McGeary came in fourth place for the 55 hurdles (8.44), and Russell Powell tied for fourth in the high jump (6-0).

Girls’ Indoor Track

Chloe Thompson earned runner-up honors in the 1,000-meter run for the Tigers at last week’s SCC Championship. Hand came in ninth place as a squad by scoring 17 points at the meet.

Thompson ran a time of 3:09.25 to take second place in the 1,000, only finishing behind Grace Adolphe (3:03.93) from Wilbur Cross. Anna Steffen finished fourth for the 3,200 (12:19.99), while Chanelle Dortch took sixth in the 600 (1:48.07). The Tigers’ 1,600 sprint medley relay of Elinor Laffargue, Bridget Phillips, Morgan Combs, and Thompson earned fourth place with a time of 4:38.47.

Girls’ Basketball

Hand qualified for the Class L State Tournament by earning a win versus Cheshire last week. The Tigers, who also defeated Foran and lost to Hillhouse, have an overall record of 9-8 to go with a mark of 4-3 in the SCC Housatonic Division.

Hand clinched its postseason berth with a 54-32 victory over Cheshire on Jan. 28. Brooke Salutari led all scorers by netting 15 points, while shooting 6-of-10 from the field. She also had five rebounds and five steals. Sara Wohlgemuth racked up 14 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Hadley Houghton was 5-of-6 from the floor for a career-high 11 points. Taya Akers scored nine points by hitting three 3-pointers to go with four steals and four boards. Hand held Cheshire scoreless for the first 10 minutes of the game was up 19-0 before the Rams got on the board. The Tigers maintained their 19-point advantage heading into halftime and led by 23 entering the fourth quarter on their way to the divisional win.

“Our kids played with a ton of energy tonight. Our defense was active, and our offense was unselfish,” said Head Coach Tim Tredwell. “We had multiple players shooting the ball with confidence, and we stayed in attack mode for 32 minutes.”

Hand went on to notch a 50-39 win against Foran on Jan. 31. Wohlgemuth filled the stat sheet with 16 points, six rebounds, four steals, and three steals. Julia Kuhn chipped in with nine points and four steals for the Tigers, who forced Foran into committing 31 turnovers. Hand led a 19-8 lead after the first quarter and stretched it to as much as 20 during the game. The Lions made a comeback bid in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough, as Hand picked up another win in divisional play.

On Feb. 1, the Tigers lost to Hillhouse by a 56-50 score. Wohlgemuth led all scorers by netting 20 points to go with six rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Hadley Houghton added 12 points and four rebounds. Hand forced Hillhouse into 25 turnovers, but the Academics shot 49 percent from the field and scored 32 points in the paint to get the win. Hand started slow and quickly fell behind 7-0. Salutari and Houghton each hit a 3-pointer to cut it to 16-13 after one. The Tigers only scored five points in the second quarter and trailed by eight at halftime. In the third quarter, Wohlgemuth went 8-of-8 from the free throw line, while Houghton scored seven points, to make it a two-point game heading into the fourth. Hand hit four 3-pointers to stay in the game, but Hillhouse staved off the Tigers to come away with the Housatonic Division victory.

Boys’ Basketball

Hand took three defeats in last week’s action. The Tigers are now 5-11 overall and 1-4 in SCC Hammonasset Division games.

The Tigers lost a 61-52 contest against Lyman Hall on Jan. 28. Scott Testori had 11 points for Hand. Jason Wallack and Pierson Chapman added 10 points apiece.

Three days later, Hand dropped a 62-42 decision versus Hillhouse. Nick Donofrio scored 13 points, and Chapman added nine points.

The Tigers later took a 57-52 defeat versus East Haven on Feb. 1.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

Hand-Coginchaug-Old Lyme improved to 2-11 after picking up its second win of the year in convincing fashion last week. The Tigers earned their second victory by posting an 8-0 shutout versus Masuk-Barlow-Newtown-Lauralton Hall on Feb. 1.

Gymnastics

The Tigers stand at 4-10 after recording a win during a three-team meet last week. Hand split a pair of matchups against Law and Norwich Free Academy on Jan. 31. The Tigers scored 127.65 points to defeat Norwich Free Academy (103.25), while taking a loss versus Law (128.55).

Grace Rogers totaled a 33.05 in the all-around, scoring an 8.85 on vault, along with an 8.7 on both beam and floor for the Tigers at the tri-meet. Hand’s other competitors included Paige Dean (32.95 all-around, 8.8 on beam, 8.45 on vault, 8.4 on floor), Carly Barba (8.8 on vault), Kelley Levis (8.2 on floor) Kayla Cataldo (8.2 on beam), Grace Segnere (8.35 on vault), and Riley Caruso (8.1 on vault and 7.9 on beam).

Wrestling

Hand moved to 10-6 after dropping a recent contest versus Xavier.

On Jan. 29, the Tigers lost a 55-15 decision against the Falcons. Kyle Davern prevailed by pin at the four-minute mark of his 120-pound bout, Sam Docker pinned his opponent at 2:29 in the 182-pound division, and Matt Derken won by a 5-1 decision at 285.
