Senior Meredith Bloss claimed first place in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs for the Guilford girls’ indoor track team at the Southern Connecticut Conference Championship last week. The Indians scored 35 points and finished in sixth place at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 1.

Bloss took the title in the 1,600 by running a time of 5:36.28 to edge out Shelton’s Alex Kenealy, who ran a 5:36.91. In the 3,200, Bloss’s mark of 11:49.87 was well ahead of runner-up Amanda LoMonte from Shelton (12:16.43). Bloss had previously won both events at the SCC West Sectional Championship two weeks ago.

Elsewhere, Sofia Migani cleared a height of 5 feet-2 inches to finish second in the high jump for Guilford. Nyla Conaway of Wilbur Cross also cleared 5-2, but got the nod for first by clearing the second-highest height of 5 feet in fewer attempts than Migani. Gianna Siciliano placed fourth in the 1,600 (5:38.87) and finished sixth in the 3,200 (12:22.40) at the SCC meet. Clara Wiesler took fifth place in the 3,200 with a time of 12:21.66.

Mark Salib took sixth place in the pole vault for the Indians at last week’s SCC Championship. Salib cleared a height of 10 feet-6 inches to score a point for Guilford that put the team in 17th place at the meet.

Girls’ Basketball

Bob Welsh earned his 100th career victory as head coach of the Guilford girls’ basketball squad when the Indians defeated Shelton last week. The Indians are one win away from making states with their overall record of 7-9. They also have a mark of 4-2 in the SCC Quinnipiac Division.

Guilford earned a 49-38 victory versus Shelton to give Coach Welsh win No. 100 on Jan. 28. Three days later, the Indians defeated Sacred Heart Academy (SHA) by a 56-40 final. Guilford finished the week by taking a 58-25 defeat against Amity on Feb. 1.

Guilford held Shelton to just 12 points in the first half when the Indians faced the Gaels. Guilford’s offense was sparked by Mia Diaz, who scored 13 points while making her first start; along with Janie Danaher, who had 12 points. Shelton made a run in the fourth, but Guilford shot 11-of-14 from the free throw line in the period to hold off the Gaels. Moira Kellaher was 7-of-8 from the stripe to help secure Coach Welsh’s 100th victory.

“It was an honor to grab win No. 100 as coach of the Indians,” said Welsh. “I wish to thank all of the players and assistant coaches who have shared in our success over the years.”

The Indians then hosted SHA on Senior Night. Guilford held a 11-10 lead after the first period, when Coach Welsh put freshman Faith O’Donnell into the game. O’Donnell gave the offense a boost by hitting three straight 3-pointers to finish the period with 11 points, propelling the Indians to a 28-17 lead at intermission. Guilford kept up a balanced scoring attack by netting 17 points in the third quarter, building the lead to 45-23. With some solid free throw shooting from Kellaher (13 points), the Indians closed out the victory. Danaher, the lone senior on the team, controlled the boards by collecting a season-high 14 rebounds.

Guilford went on to take a loss versus Amity in its final matchup of the week.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Indians split two contests last week to move to 7-7 on the year.

Guilford defeated Trumbull-St. Joseph by a 7-4 score on Jan. 28. Maddie Epke had a huge game by scoring four goals and dishing out three assists for the Indians. Daniella Vickerman, Trinity Ireland, and Jaime Neleber each had a goal and assist. Morgan Mancuso made 18 saves in net for Guilford.

Guilford then lost a 4-2 decision versus Notre Dame-Fairfield/Law/Foran/Weston/Pomperaug the following night. Epke and Audrey Rowan scored goals for the Indians, while Sarah Ziemba had two assists.
