Valley Boys’ Basketball Routs Westbrook; Falivene Takes Heavyweight Title at Shoreline Scuffle

Boys Basketball

The Valley Regional boys’ basketball team played one game last week and came away with a convincing win against Westbrook. The victory improved the Warriors’ record to 9-3 on the season.

On Jan. 21, Valley hosted Westbrook and prevailed by the final score of 51-23. Following a 7-7 first quarter, Valley took a 13-10 lead into halftime. The Warriors then outscored the Knights 20-7 during the third quarter to pull away for the victory.

Junior Cade Ensinger recorded a double-double for Valley, leading all scorers with 18 points to go along with 10 steals and five rebounds. Fellow junior Chris Sparaco also notched a double-double on 10 points and 13 rebounds. Senior captain Kevin Fasulo had seven points with eight rebounds, three blocks, three assists, and three steals in the win. Junior Gavin Grabowski scored 11 points to go with five boards and two steals.

Wrestling

Senior Ben Falivene represented Valley Regional at the Shoreline Scuffle at Branford High School on Jan. 26. Falivene grabbed a gold medal by taking first place in the 285-pound weight class at the meet.

After receiving a first-round bye, Falivene pinned Greg Torigian of Fairfield Prep in just 23 seconds in the quarterfinals. In the semis, Falivene pinned Ben Clay of New Canaan at the 1:47 mark. Then in the championship, Falivene pinned Matt Weiner of Shelton in 1:50 to finish first in the heavyweight division. With the win, Falivene exacted a bit of revenge against Weiner, who had defeated Falivene in the championship match of the Shelton Invitational earlier in the year.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The East Haven-Old Lyme-Old Saybrook-East Hampton-Morgan-Valley Regional ice hockey team won its lone game last week to improve to 6-6-1 this year. The Yellowjackets traveled to Milford Ice Pavilion on Jan. 26 and earned a 4-3 win versus the Milford co-op squad to get back to the .500 mark.

Junior goalie Logan Hamilton made 24 saves for the Easties, who saw four different skaters find the back of the net against Milford. Sophomore Dave Amatruda had a goal and an assist, while fellow East Haven sophomore Rocco Plano, Old Saybrook sophomore Cory Benni, and Valley Regional senior Ricky Persico scored one goal apiece. Morgan sophomore Ryan Egan added an assist in the victory.

Boys’ Indoor Track

Valley Regional saw Andrew Ferguson earn first place in the 55-meter dash by running a time of 6.71 seconds at Shoreline Conference League Meet No. 2 at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Jan. 26. The Warriors took seventh place as a team by scoring 37 points at the meet.

Ferguson also finished second in the 300-meter dash with a time of 37.36 seconds for Valley. Peter Halsey snagged silver in the 1,000-meter run by timing in at 2:59.42. Garrhett Watrous earned second place in the shot put with a throw of 36 feet-10 inches.

Girls’ Indoor Track

Madelyn Costello finished second in the high jump by clearing 4 feet-6 inches for the Warriors at Shoreline Conference League Meet No. 2 last week. The Warriors scored 36 points and came in sixth place on the day.

Other notable finishes for Valley included Lexi Ross, who secured third place in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.97 seconds; and Lacey Hall, who also took home a third-place finish in the 600-meter run at 1:56.08.
