Old Saybrook Boys’ Hoops Rams Way into States

Boys’ Basketball

The Old Saybrook boys’ basketball team qualified for the Division IV State Tournament after recording wins over Portland and Westbrook last week. The two victories extended the Rams’ win streak to seven consecutive games and boosted their record to 8-3 on the season.

On Jan. 22, Old Saybrook hosted Portland and defeated the Highlanders by a 60-44 margin. The Rams’ offense exploded in the second quarter, resulting in a 32-19 advantage at halftime. Old Saybrook added to its lead in the second half to finish with the 16-point win.

Senior captain Shane Henderson led all scorers with 26 points to go along with eight rebounds and seven assists for Old Saybrook. Davis Brown added 19 points with four 3-pointers, four boards, and seven assists. Senior captain Dan Cote made his return to the lineup and posted 10 points with eight rebounds. Mike Almada added five points in the win.

Three days later, the Rams picked up a 68-23 victory at Westbrook to book their trip to the postseason. Old Saybrook held a 40-16 command heading into the third quarter and never looked back en route to the 45-point win. Henderson notched a double-double with 27 points and 10 rebounds, and he also had three assists. Brown drained four more 3-pointers on his way to scoring 20 points to go with three rebounds and two assists. Almada had four assists and four rebounds, while Gino Gallito and Paddy Ryan combined for 12 points.

Girls’ Basketball

Old Saybrook lost three contests in last week’s action.

On Jan. 22, the Rams took a 64-31 defeat at Portland. Three days later, Old Saybrook lost a 46-25 contest at Westbrook. Then on Jan. 26, the Rams hosted Valley Regional and dropped a 54-44 decision to move to 1-13 on the season.

Girls’ Indoor Track

Old Saybrook finished in first place at Shoreline Conference League Meet No. 2 that took place at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on Jan. 25. The Rams scored 123 points behind some outstanding first-place performances from several athletes.

Cate Coppes grabbed the gold in the 55-meter hurdles by running a time of 9.46 seconds, in addition to claiming first in the pole vault with a height of 9 feet-6 inches. Caitlin Wiley recorded a first-place finish in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 3:25.87, placing just ahead of teammate Tehra Givehand, who took second in 3:26.46. In the 300-meter dash, Allison Cody ran a time of 44.48 seconds to take first place. Rachel Vigorita placed first in the high jump with a height of 5 feet.

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Rams took first place as a squad at Shoreline Conference League Meet No. 2 on Jan. 25. Old Saybrook totaled 86 points to take the top spot overall.

Old Saybrook’s 4x200-meter relay of Jack Colella, Carlos Chacon, Devon Moshier, and Max Thomas turned in a time of 1:37.35 to take first place at the meet. The 1,600 sprint medley relay quartet of Thomas, Chacon, Colella, and Cooper Luciani finished first with a time of 3:48.15. Shon Ryan, Luciani, Luke Hanratty, and Colella took first place in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:45.07. In the shot put, Landis Twomey threw a distance to 37 feet-4 inches to finish in first place.
