Morgan Girls’ Basketball Defeats North Branford; Girls’ Track Takes 2nd at League Meet

Girls’ Basketball

One week after earning a postseason berth, the Morgan girls’ basketball team increased its win streak to five straight games by earning a victory over North Branford last week. The Huskies improved their record to 10-3 on the season with the win.

On Jan. 21, Morgan hosted North Branford and defeated the Thunderbirds by a score of 45-40. The Huskies had to climb out of an early deficit in order to come away with the victory. North Branford got out to an early 11-6 lead in the first quarter, but Morgan turned the tables in the second to take a 24-21 lead at halftime. The Huskies extended their advantage in the second half en route to the five-point victory.

Junior Leah McComiskey led the Huskies with 16 points to go along with five rebounds, five blocks, four assists, and three steals. Sophomore point guard Catie Donadio had 10 points with four rebounds, two blocks, and five assists for Morgan. Senior captain Kylee Clifton scored four points and also had five boards with three assists, three steals, and two blocks. Fellow captain Joelle Vuilleumier recorded eight rebounds, three assists, one block, and one steal on the night.

Girls’ Indoor Track

Morgan came in second place by scoring 50 points at Shoreline Conference League Meet No. 2 at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on Jan. 26.

The Huskies were bolstered by a handful of first-place finishes at the meet, including their 4x200-meter relay quartet of Alyssa LeMay, Madison Corgan, Jessican Flanagan, and Carley Schmidt that finished with a time of 1:53.76. Also grabbing gold at the meet was the 4x800 relay squad of Erin Lindsay, Isabella Ranaudo, Colleen Edwards, and Madison Emmi, who posted a time of 11:20.13. Edwards also took first place in the shot put with a distance of 28 feet-7.5 inches.

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Huskies scored 56 points and finished in fourth place as a team at Shoreline Conference League Meet No. 2 last week.

Morgan’s 4x400 relay team of Calvin Jackson, Chayse Lofgren, Mike Savage, and Paul Rodriguez took second place with a time of 3:54.54 at the meet. The 4x200 relay of Bryce Thomas, Ryan Warner, Jackson, and Ryan Caldwell also earned runner-up honors by finishing with a time of 1:41.31. Rodriguez also placed second in the long jump by recording a leap of 18 feet-9.25 inches.

Wrestling

Morgan competed at the Shoreline Scuffle that was held at Branford High School on Jan. 26. The Huskies saw solid results from several wrestlers to come in fifth place as a team.

Louis Bradley earned first-place honors in the 132-pound division at the Shoreline Scuffle and was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler for his performance in the meet. Aidan McEnaney took third place in the 106-pound division, while Kyle Nuemann finished third at 170. Jordan Armstrong came in third place in the 195-pound weight class. Ryan Hromadka (160), Ethan Reemsnyder (182), and Dominic Carpenter (195) all took fourth place in their respective weight classes for the Huskies.
