Knights’ Girls’ Hoops One Win Shy of States; Boys Lose Two

Girls’ Basketball

The Westbrook girls’ basketball team notched one win in last week’s action by defeating Old Saybrook and taking losses against Valley Regional and Cromwell. The Knights now have a record of 7-7 and need one more win to qualify for both the Shoreline Conference Tournament and the Class S State Tournament.

On Jan. 21, Westbrook lost a 52-47 contest to Valley Regional in a close game that saw both teams trade baskets all night. Westbrook was only down 35-31 entering the fourth quarter, but couldn’t get the final push that it needed to take the game. Senior captain Savannah Marshall led all scorers with 25 points to go with 10 rebounds for a double-double. Fellow senior captain Gabby Ehlert scored a season-high 19 points for the Knights.

Four days later, Westbrook bounced back to beat Old Saybrook by a 46-25 final. Marshall scored 21 points, while Ehlert provided 13 points in the victory. Senior Kelly Donlan had six points, and junior Lexi Koplas added four points.

On Jan. 26, the Knights took a 79-16 defeat against Cromwell.

Boys’ Basketball

Westbrook moved to 5-9 after dropping recent contests against Valley Regional and Old Saybrook.

On Jan. 21, Westbrook took a 51-23 defeat at Valley Regional. The Knights trailed 13-10 at halftime, but Valley found its scoring touch in the second half, and pulled away for the win. Brendan Engels scored seven points, and Jesse Whitney had five points for Westbrook. Jack Naccarato pulled down seven rebounds.

On Jan. 25, Westbrook hosted Old Saybrook and took a 68-23 defeat. Engels scored nine points in the loss, while Ben Schrek corralled nine rebounds.

Girls’ Indoor Track

The Knights competed at Shoreline Conference League Meet No. 2 at the Floyd Little Athletic Center on Jan. 26. Westbrook came in ninth place with a total of 14 points scored.

Westbrook recorded seven personal-best times at the meet, including one from sophomore Elizabeth Gallagher, who claimed second place in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.93 seconds. Gallagher also took eighth place in the 300 by running a time of 48.17 seconds. Senior captain Avery Bauman earned fourth place in the 1,000-meter run (3:29.46), and sophomore Brooke Neri finished fifth in the event with a personal-best time of 3:37.50. Freshman Riley Metcalfe finished the 55 with a personal-record time of 8.4 seconds to go with a personal-best mark of 48.70 seconds in the 300.

Boys’ Indoor Track

Westbrook took part in the second Shoreline Conference League Meet of the year last week.

Michael Gingras posted a personal-best performance in the pole vault by clearing a height of 9 feet-6 inches to take sixth place and score a point for the Knights. Also turning in a personal-best showing was sophomore Cole Strzelecki, who finished the 600-meter run with a time of 1:51.31.
