Easties’ Girls’ Hoops Runs Win Streak to Nine Straight; Wrestling Takes the Title at East Hartford Duals

Girls’ Basketball

One week after qualifying for postseason play, the East Haven girls’ basketball team earned victories versus Hamden and Amity to extend its win streak to nine straight games last week. The Yellowjackets improved to 12-2 overall and have a record of 4-0 in the SCC Oronoque Division.

East Haven hosted Hamden on Jan. 23 and defeated the Green Dragons 72-59. Hamden held a 35-32 lead going into halftime, but the Yellowjackets outscored the Green Dragons 19-8 during the third quarter to take the lead for good. Senior captain Makenzie Helms scored 35 points to go with 13 rebounds and seven steals for East Haven. Sophomore Taylor Salato had 12 points, sophomore Angelina Munoz scored eight points, and senior captain Alexis Pendziwater netted six points. Junior captain Bella Ragaini added six points and had eight assists in the win. As a team, East Haven drilled eight 3-pointers on the night.

Two nights later, the Yellowjackets edged out SCC Oronoque foe Amity by 50-46 final on the road. Amity took a 37-33 lead into the fourth quarter, but East Haven mounted another comeback and went on to stun the Spartans for the team’s ninth win in a row. Helms scored a game-high 30 points, and Salato had 14 points for the Yellowjackets, whose last loss was a one-point defeat versus East Lyme back on Dec. 22.

Boys’ Basketball

East Haven dropped a pair of contests in SCC Oronoque Division action last week. The Yellowjackets are now 4-8 on the season.

On Jan. 22, East Haven took a 51-34 defeat at Career. The Yellowjackets fell behind 24-12 after the first half and were unable to make up the deficit. Senior Nate Furino scored 17 points, while sophomore Ian Reynolds had nine points in the loss.

Then on Jan. 25, the Easties lost a 54-34 home game versus Fairfield Prep. Furino scored 11 points, and sophomore Alias Ford had 10 points for the Yellowjackets.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The East Haven-Old Lyme-Old Saybrook-East Hampton-Morgan-Valley Regional ice hockey team won its lone game last week to improve to 6-6-1 this year. The Yellowjackets traveled to Milford Ice Pavilion on Jan. 26 and earned a 4-3 win versus the Milford co-op squad to get back to the .500 mark.

Junior goalie Logan Hamilton made 24 saves for the Easties, who saw four different skaters find the back of the net against Milford. Sophomore Dave Amatruda had a goal and an assist, while fellow East Haven sophomore Rocco Plano, Old Saybrook sophomore Cory Benni, and Valley Regional senior Ricky Persico scored one goal apiece. Morgan sophomore Ryan Egan added an assist in the victory.

Wrestling

East Haven stands at 19-4 after losing a recent matchup versus Xavier and then posting a four-win sweep to take the title at the East Hartford Duals last week.

The Yellowjackets took a 62-15 defeat at Xavier on Jan. 23. Senior Victor Garcia won by a technical fall score of 18-3 at the 113-pound division for East Haven. Sophomore Matt Divito won by 16-4 major decision at 120 pounds, and senior captain Josh Rao earned a win by pin in 41 seconds in the 195-pound bout.

Three days later, East Haven went 4-0 to win the East Hartford Duals, notching victories over Coventry (77-6), Windsor (77-0), Farmington (41-33), and East Hartford (45-27). Five different Yellowjackets earned four wins during the meet, including Garcia (113), Matt DiVito (120 and 126), junior Alec DiVito (132 and 138), senior Danny Jarrin (170), and senior captain Armando Castaneda (285). Jarrin won three matches by pin and the other via a 7-2 decision. Alec DiVito earned two pins and also two wins by decision. Castaneda, Matt DiVito, and Garcia had a balance of wins by pin, decision, and forfeit throughout the afternoon. Sophomore Dominic Milano (106), junior Fabricio Buggatti (152), senior Nick Harrold (160) junior Vincenzo Bunce (182), and Rao (195) all won three bouts for the Yellowjackets. Freshman Frank Papa (126 and 132), sophomore Eric Araujo (145), junior Tanner DiVito (138), and sophomore Gunner Horton (220) each recorded two victories.
