Marriott Wins the Long Jump at Sectional Championship

Senior Erica Marriott took first place in the long jump to help the North Haven girls’ indoor track team finish in fourth place at the Southern Connecticut Conference West Sectional Championship on Jan. 23. The Indians scored 56 points as a team to place fourth in the West Sectional meet, which was held at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.

Marriott reached a distance of 17 feet-10.75 inches to defeat runner-up Kisha Francois of East Haven (17-6.5) for first place in the long jump. She also ran on a pair of third-place relays for North Haven. The Indians’ 4x200 relay of seniors Giselle Zumerchik and Camille Sahirul, junior Sammy Curcio, and Marriott claimed third place with a time of 1:50.60. The 4x400 relay featuring Sahriul, Zumerchik, freshman Grace Finch, and Marriott ran a time of 4:23.85 to take third place. North Haven’s 1,600 sprint medley relay of Zumerchik, Curcio, Finch, and freshman Lorelei King also finished in third place by posting a time of 4:53.54.

Junior Makayla Mansur cleared a height of 6 feet to finish second in the pole vault for North Haven. Junior Courtney McFarland took third in the shot put with a throw of 29 feet-2.25 inches, while freshman Emily Cocco finished fourth at 27-5. Sahirul finished fourth in the long jump with a leap of 15-8.5.

In the high jump, senior Katie Rogers and King finished in a tie for fourth place after both athletes cleared 4-6. Freshman Makayla Greene also cleared 4-6 and came in eighth place on a tiebreaker. Fellow freshman Ada Forbes placed ninth in the event by clearing 4-4. In the 55 hurdles, junior Elizabeth DeVaux ran a time of 10.47 in the preliminaries to take seventh place and advance to the finals, where she came in seventh place by finishing with a time of 10.48.

In the 4x800 relay, North Haven’s team of seniors Emily Casamento, Madeline Libero, and Kelly Fresher, and junior Reagan Forbes took sixth place with a time of 12:10.44. Senior Lily Corcoran finished ninth in the 1,000-meter run (4:27.85), while Forbes placed 10th in the 1,600 with a mark of 6:15.24.
