H-K Ice Hockey Makes Way to States; Boys’ Hoops Rolls Over Wheeler

Ice Hockey

The Lyman Hall/Haddam-Killingworth/Coginchaug ice hockey squad posted a trio of road victories and assured itself a bid in the Division III State Tournament last week. The team now has a record of 10-2 and is on a nine-game winning streak.

On Jan. 23, the Trojans defeated Masuk by a 6-3 final at The Rinks at Shelton to clinch their State Tournament berth. Two days later, they earned a 9-1 road win over Shepaug-Litchfield-Thomaston-Nonnewaug. The following day, Lyman Hall/H-K/Coginchaug faced off with Sheehan at Weselyan University and prevailed 3-0 versus the Titans.

Boys’ Basketball

H-K stands at 5-6 after losing two of its three games last week.

The Cougars started off the week by dropping a 76-55 decision against Cromwell on Jan. 22. The very next night, H-K defeated Wheeler by the score of 53-38 in a non-conference game. Then on Jan. 25, H-K took a 54-52 defeat to Morgan.

Girls’ Basketball

The Cougars squared off against Shoreline Conference opponent Cromwell last week. H-K took a 61-38 loss versus the Panthers on Jan. 22 to move to 3-11 on the year.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

Haddam-Killingworth edged out Lyman Hall-Coginchaug for a 94-89 victory on Jan 24. The Cougars improved to 2-3 on the season with the win.

Eli Houlton claimed first place in the 50 freestyle (22.72 seconds) and the 100 butterfly (58.50) for H-K. Zach Houlton finished first in both the 200 freestyle (1:56.75) and the 500 freestyle (5:03.72). Kyle Mazziotti took first place in the 100 freestyle (51.34) and the 100 backstroke (51.34), while Malone Revis placed first in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.25) and the 200 individual medley (2:11.50).

Jim Clemente finished second in the 100 butterfly (1:04.40), Jonah Freeman took third in the 200 freestyle (2:13.97), and Colby Kish was third for the 100 backstroke (1:17.10) to aid the Cougars. In the 200 IM, Nate Carlson finished second (2:28.28), and Chris Garrelts came in third place at 2:32.66.

H-K also took first place in all three relays against Lyman Hall-Coginchaug. The 200 medley of Mazziotti, Revis, Eli Houlton, and Garrelts posted a time of 1:49.22; the 200 freestyle relay of Revis, Clemente, Eli/Zach Houlton, and Garrelts finished in 1:42.22; and the 400 freestyle quartet of Garrelts, Eli Houlton, Zach Houlton, and Mazziotto claimed victory by swimming a time of 3:33.81.

Gymnastics

The Cougars competed against several teams from the area in a multi-team meet at Daniel Hand High School in Madison on Jan. 24. H-K totaled a score of 66.6 points and took defeats against Mercy (131.4), Hand (128.2), and Valley Regional (121.5) at the meet.

Brianna Livingston finished with an all-around score of 27.5 that included a 7.8 on vault, a 7.3 on floor, a 6.5 on the beam, and a 5.9 on bars. Chloe Totman finished with a 7.0 on vault, while Anastasia Inkel earned a score of 6.7 for H-K.
