Guilford Wrestling Pins Hand; Boys’ Hockey on Nine-Game Win Streak

Wrestling

The Guilford wrestling team pulled off a tight win versus rival Hand, before grabbing two more victories in a quad-meet last weekend. With these results, the Indians boosted their overall record to 16-8 on the year.

Guilford defeated Hand by the final score of 37-31 on Jan. 23. Drew Koval prevailed on a 14-5 decision in the 106-pound weight class for the Indians. Guilford was further spurred by victories from Ed Barlage (113, 7-0 decision), Anthony Bomgardner (126, pin at 0:44), Keldon LaRose (132, pin at 1:59), George Sanderlin (138, pin at 0:50), Vin Mascola (145, pin at 1:48), and Brent Strand (152, pin at 1:02) in its win against the Tigers.

On Jan. 26, the Indians went up against three teams at a quad-meet. Guilford defeated Ellis Tech by a 43-28 final, earned a 59-19 victory over Lyman Memorial-Windham Tech 59-19, and took a 45-27 loss versus Killingly.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Indians improved to 11-2 and increased their win streak to nine straight games posting a pair of wins in last week’s action.

Guilford defeated Watertown-Pomperaug by a 5-3 final at DiLungo Rink on Jan. 23. The Indians then took down Amity, 5-2, at Bennett Rink on Jan. 26.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

Guilford stands at 6-6 following two defeats last week.

The Indians took an 8-3 loss against on Jan. 23. Then on Jan. 26, Guilford dropped a 7-2 decision versus Amity-North Haven-Cheshire.

Boys’ Basketball

Guilford has an overall record of 5-7 and is 2-2 in the SCC Quinnipiac Division after dropping two contests last week.

Guilford took a 77-41 defeat against Notre Dame-West Haven on Jan. 22. On Jan. 25, the Indians lost to Xavier by the final score of 48-44.

Girls’ Basketball

The Indians took two recent defeats to move to 5-8 overall and 2-2 in the SCC Quinnipiac Division.

On Jan. 22, the Indians dropped a 52-50 decision versus Guilford. Three days later, Guilford took a 76-30 loss to Hamden.

Boys’ and Girls’ Fencing

The Indians competed in a couple of JV and novice events last week.

On Jan. 24, the Guilford JV boys’ team prevailed 21-6 over Hand, while the girls defeated the Tigers 23-4. On the novice end, the girls emerged victorious by a 13-4 score, and the boys squeaked out a 14-13 win versus Hand. Owen Angkatavanich, Leandra Ebel, Julia Gangemi, Camile Gipson, Jack Greiner, Wilson Guo, Olivia Labelle, Ava McClure, and Sophia Ruser each went undefeated for Guilford on the day. Olivia Labelle picked up three more wins and now has 13th victories this season.

On Jan. 26, the Indians hosted a novice tournament at which 63 girls and 102 boys from multiple high schools were represented. For Guilford, 10 novice fencers placed in the top eight spots for each discipline. Six of those fencers made it to the semifinals, and four competed in the final rounds.

Two Guilford teammates faced off during the exciting girls’ épée final, where Gangemi won the gold medal with a win against Ebell, who took the silver. Lucia Rusconi earned silver in girls’ sabre, and Sam Gunderson won a silver medal for boys’ épée. Angaktanvanich finished a strong third for boys’ sabre.
