North Haven Boys’ Swimming Gets First Win; Blades Post 6-0 Shutout

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The North Haven boys’ swimming and diving team earned its first win of the year by defeating Lyman Hall-Coginchaug 94-89 at Gawrych Town Pool on Jan. 15. The Indians improved to 1-3 with the victory.

Senior Will McCleery took first place in the 50 freestyle with a season-best time of 22.95 seconds and also won the 500 freestyle (5:22.55) to help North Haven prevail. Fellow senior JP Stoeffler won the 100 freestyle (50.94) and the 200 freestyle (1:56.21). Senior Kevin Powers placed first in the 100 butterfly (1:01.78) and finished with a season-best time of 2:24.09 in the 200 individual medley. Sophomore Cameron Cargan took first in the 200 individual medley with a season-best mark of 2:18.48.

In relays, North Haven’s 200 medley team of McCleery, Stoeffler, Powers, and Cargan claimed first place with a time of 1:50.95. The Indians’ 200 freestyle relay of sophomore Tanner Powell, senior Thomas O’Connor, Powers, and junior Stephen Borrelli came in first place by swimming a time of 1:43.47.

Borrelli recorded lifetime-best times in the 200 freestyle (2:08.73) and the 500 freestyle (5:36.27). Senior Tommy O’Connor swam a season-best time of 58.85 for the 100 freestyle. The following athletes also posted lifetime-best marks at the meet: Senior Tim Chin (35.30) and sophomore Ahmed Anwar (40.77) in the 50 freestyle (35.30), Powell (1:06.95) and freshman Kyle Borrelli (1:27.91) in the 100 butterfly; sophomore Marco Criscola (1:17.77), Chin (1:37.21), and sophomore Joe O’Connor (1:48.95) in the 100 backstroke; and Kyle Borrelli (1:30.04) and Anwar (1:43.55) in the 100 breaststroke.

Boys’ Basketball

The Indians took a loss against West Haven, but then picked up their third win of the year by beating Xavier last week. The Indians moved to 3-7 this winter following the split.

On Jan. 15, the Indians dropped a 60-39 decision against West Haven in a home game. The Blue Devils held a 21-8 lead after the first quarter and brought a 33-13 advantage into halftime. West Haven outscored North Haven 16-7 during the third quarter to make it 49-20 entering the fourth. Senior RJ Hager scored 19 points for North Haven. Junior Dave Christoforo had six points, and junior Bryce Charney scored five points.

Three days later, North Haven hosted Xavier and claimed a 51-33 victory. The Indians jumped out to a 16-6 lead after the first quarter and held a 25-12 halftime advantage over the Falcons. North Haven outscored Xavier 12-7 in the third quarter to bring a 37-19 lead into the fourth. Hager scored 19 points for the second straight game to lead North Haven. Senior Mike Collins had 11 points, Christoforo scored 10 points, and senior Josh Monk added six points.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Amity-North Haven-Cheshire girls’ ice hockey team posted a 6-0 shutout over Masuk-Barlow-Newtown-Lauralton Hall at Lou Astorino Ice Arena on Jan. 17. The Blades now stand at 4-8 on the year.

Andrea DelVecchio got the Blades on the board when she scored fellow senior captain Shannon Reilly to give them a 1-0 lead in the opening period. In the second period, Reilly scored from junior Sara Cable to make it 2-0. Sophomore Olivea Kosh scored from freshman Mia Dow to put the Blades up 3-0, after which senior captain Meaghan Hogan scored from junior Haley Cable for a 4-0 lead. Reilly followed by scoring her second goal to put the Blades up 5-0 through two.

In the final frame, DelVecchio netted her second goal on an assist from Sara Cable to put a bow on the 6-0 win. Senior Caitlyn Ranciato made eight saves to get the shutout for the Blades.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

North Haven hosted non-conference opponent Conard on Jan. 16 and dropped a 5-4 overtime decision at Northford Ice Pavilion. The Indians moved to 1-6-2 on the season with the defeat.

Rifle

North Haven competed against Vinal Tech in its first match of the season at Blue Trail Range on Jan. 18. The Indians earned a 927-785 victory to start off the year at 1-0.

Caleb Johns shot a 190 out of a possible 200 to lead North Haven. Camille Sahirl shot a 186, Max Rook finished with a 185, Matteo Franco scored a 184, and Hannah Fruin totaled a score of 182 for North Haven.

Girls’ Indoor Track

North Haven had a busy week that saw the Indians compete at the SCC Novice Meet and the SCC Coaches Invitational, which were held at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on Jan. 15 and 19, respectively.

Freshman Lorelei King took first place in the high jump and finished second in the 1,000-meter run at the Novice Meet. King cleared a height of 4 feet-6 inches to win the high jump. Runner-up Romane Rigoland also cleared 4-6, but King got the nod for first by clearing the previous height of 4-4 in fewer attempts than Rigoland. In the 1,000, King ran a time of 3:35.70 to claim second place.

Junior Makayla Mansur took second place in the pole vault with a height of 6-6. Makayla Greene placed fourth (4-4) in the 300, while fellow freshman Ada Forbes finished seventh (4-2). Freshman Emily Cocco finished second in the shot put with a throw of 24 feet-9 inches. Freshman Grace Finch placed eighth in the 300-meter dash at 48.49.

Four days later, North Haven finished in 20th place by scoring 10 points at the SCC Coaches Invitational. Senior Erica Marriott finished third in the long jump with a distance of 17 feet-5 inches, scoring six points for the Indians. North Haven scored four points in the 4x200 relay as its team of seniors Giselle Zumerchik and Camille Sahirul, junior Sammy Curcio, and Marriott claimed fifth place with a time of 1:52.24. Sahirul also finished 12th in the long jump (15-5), while Zumerchik took 15th place in the 300 (46.10). In the shot put, junior Courtney McFarland came in 15th place by throwing 28 feet-9 inches.

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Indians had plenty of athletes compete at the SCC Novice Meet and the SCC Coaches Invitational last week.

In the Novice Meet, sophomore Patrick Rourke finished second in the 1,600 by running a time of 4:50.99. Fellow sophomore Anthony Vigliotto came in second in the shot put with a toss of 34 feet-9.75 inches. Freshman Jack Pollard finished fourth in the 300-meter dash (41.00) and was also fourth in the 600-meter run (1:35.23). Fellow freshman Mike DeVilliers took sixth place in the 600 at 1:36.54. Junior Ethan Testa advanced to the finals of the 55-meter hurdles by placing fourth in the preliminaries with a time of 9.73 seconds. In the finals, Testa ran a time of 9.79 to finish in fourth place.

At the Coaches Invitational, North Haven tallied seven points and finished in a three-way tie for 29th place. Junior Luke Maruca scored four points by placing fifth in the shot put behind a throw of 44 feet-10.25 inches. Eric Spignesi cleared 12-6 to take sixth place in the pole vault and score three points. Junior Kyle Maruca finished ninth in the shot put (43-0.75), while senior Robert Farley placed ninth in the preliminaries of the 55 hurdles with a time of 8.36 seconds. In the 4x800 relay, North Haven’s team of seniors Jack Opramolla, Jobin Valiyaveettil, and Jackson Frank, and Rourke finished in 11th place by posting a time of 8:56.51.
