Hand Boys’ Hockey Qualifies for States; Boys’ Hoops Beats East Haven, 66-44

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Hand boys’ ice hockey team posted a pair of victories last week to improve to 9-1-1 and secure a spot in the Division III State Tournament. The Tigers have won four games in a row and are on a seven-game unbeaten streak.

On Jan. 14, Hand qualified for the Division III State Tournament by earning 5-1 win over non-conference opponent Trinity Catholic at Northford Ice Pavilion. Four nights later, the Tigers notched an 8-2 victory versus Fairfield Warde-Ludlowe in another non-conference game at Northford Ice Pavilion.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Hand-Coginchaug-Old Lyme girls’ ice hockey squad took two defeats last week to move to 1-9 on the season.

The Tigers lost a 3-2 decision against Notre Dame-Fairfield/Law/Foran/Weston/Pomperaug on Jan. 18. The next day, Hand lost to Simsbury by the final score of 6-0.

Boys’ Basketball

The Tigers split a pair of games last week and are now 5-6 this winter.

Hand earned a 66-44 win versus East Haven on Jan. 15. Pierson Chapman scored 23 points for Hand, shooting 9-of-13 from the field, including five 3-pointers. Ethan Haberman added 10 points, while Nick Donofrio had nine points and seven rebounds in the victory.

Three days later, Hand dropped a 43-37 decision versus Guilford. Donofrio had 12 points for the Tigers on the night.

Girls’ Basketball

Hand lost to Hillhouse and then defeated Guilford last week. The Tigers now stand at 7-5 overall and are 2-1 in the SCC Housatonic Division.

The Tigers took a 59-49 defeat against Hillhouse on Jan. 16. Sara Wohlgemuth led the Tigers with 15 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. Brooke Salutari also scored 15 points, including four 3-pointers. Summer Adams chipped in seven points and nine rebounds.

Hillhouse jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and held a 24-14 advantage midway through the second quarter. However, Hand closed the quarter with a run to get within four heading into the locker room at halftime. The Tigers continued playing well in the third quarter and were only down one entering the fourth quarter. While the game stayed close through most of the period, Hillhouse busted out for 24 points in the final frame to secure the divisional win.

Hand then defeated Guilford by a 37-26 final on Jan. 18. Salutari posted 10 points, including a pair of threes, to go along with five steals. Adams had eight points and nine rebounds for the Tigers. Wohlgemuth chipped in nine points, including two 3-pointers. Hand forced Guilford into 35 turnovers for the game.

Hand fell behind 8-0 and was down 13-9 after one. The Tigers took their first lead just before halftime and were up 19-17 at intermission. From there, Hand put on the clamps, allowing Guilford to score just nine points during the entire second half. Up 27-24 in the fourth quarter, Hand finished the game on a 10-2 run to ice the rivalry win.

Wrestling

Hand moved to 10-4 after taking a loss against Foran last week.

The Tigers took a 48-25 defeat to Foran on Jan. 16. Sam Stein won by a 19-6 decision in the 106-pound weight class for the Tigers, who also received victories from Zachary Morro (113, 6-5 decision), Kyle Davern (120, pin at 1:00), Jared Puricelli (132, pin at 2:34), and Sam Williams (152, pin at 1:58).

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

Hand had a meet against Shelton last week. On Jan. 14, the Tigers went on the road to face Shelton and lost a 92-73 contest against the Gaels.

Gymnastics

The Tigers took two losses last week and are 0-6 on the year.

On Jan. 14, Hand lost a 133.5-122.5 decision versus Glastonbury. Paige Dean totaled a score of 33.0 for the all-around, including an 8.6 on vault and 8.3 on beam. Kayla Cataldo scored a 30.6 in the all-around, led by an 8.1 on vault and a 7.9 on floor. Riley Caruso had a score of 28.3 for the all-around, including a 7.9 on vault. Kelley Levis scored an 8.5 for the floor, Grace Segnere finished with an 8.1 on vault, Alara Nahar followed with a 7.7 on vault, and Catherine Aranow scored a 7.6 on beam.

The Tigers lost to Foran by a 109.3-108.7 on Jan. 17. Rogers scored a 31.0 for the all-around, including an 8.4 on floor, an 8.1 on vault, and an 8.0 on beam. Caruso totaled a 25.3 for the all-around with a 7.6 on vault. Segnere scored a 25.4 for the all-around, including a 8.0 vault and a 7.0 on both beam and floor. Levis finished with a 7.9 on floor and a 7.7 on vault, Aranow scored a 7.4 on beam, and Alara Nahar posted a score of 7.6 on vault.
