Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Guilford boys’ ice hockey team improved to 9-2 and locked up a berth in the Division II State Tournament after posting two more victories last week. The Indians have won their last seven games.

Guilford clinched its spot in states by earning a 7-4 victory versus the Eastern CT Eagles at Connecticut College on Jan. 15. Four days later, the Indians notched a 5-1 win against the East Haven-Old Lyme-Old Saybrook-East Hampton-Morgan-Valley Regional co-op team in a home game at DiLungo Rink. Shea Thibault scored two goals for Guilford in the victory. Connor Hagness, Tyler Considine, and Jake Watrous also netted goals for the Indians.

Watrous and John DeLucia had two assists apiece, plus Steven Tortora and Jack Dacey also contributed assists. Alex Attruia made 24 saves for the Indians, who outshot the Yellowjackets 37-25.

Guilford took a defeat against Cross and then earned a win versus Hand in last week’s action. The Indians evened their record at 5-5 and now stand at 2-1 in the SCC Quinnipiac Division.

The Indians lost two of their three games last week to move to 5-6 on the season.

Elle Petra had 11 rebounds and eight steals against Morgan. Sam Leiby scored nine points for the Indians.

In the Amity game, the Indians turned up the pressure on both ends of the floor with a high level of energy sparking a stifling defensive effort that led to many fast-break baskets. Leiby hit a 3-pointer with time running out in the first half to give Guilford a 10-point lead at intermission. Guilford kept the pressure on in the third quarter and increased the lead to 42-27 at the end of the period. Leiby and Moira Kellaher led the way with 18 and 16 points, respectively, for the Indians. Petra scored 10 points on the night. Kellaher and Petra combined for 12 steals.

Against Hand, Guilford jumped out to an early 11-3 lead behind Janie Danaher, who scored 11 points in the first half. Hand hit a couple of threes and went to the locker room up 19-17. Both teams struggled to put the ball in the basket in the third quarter, and the Tigers took a five-point lead into the fourth on their way to the victory.
