The Morgan boys’ basketball team secured a pair of wins by defeating Hale-Ray and Amistad last week. The Huskies improved their record to 6-3 on the season with the two victories.

On Jan. 7, Morgan earned a 51-37 win at Hale-Ray in a Shoreline Conference game. Morgan jumped out to a 10-4 advantage in the first quarter and was up 21-13 at halftime. The Huskies played a dominant third quarter and stretched the lead to 44-21, allowing for smooth sailing the rest of the way. Senior Chris Nuzzo led the scoring attack with 14 points to go along with five assists. Senior AJ Fritz and sophomore Zach Johnson added eight points apiece for the Huskies.

Three days later, Morgan hosted non-conference opponent Amistad and edged out the Wolves, 50-47. Nuzzo had a big fourth-quarter performance by scoring nine points in the frame. Morgan took a 29-24 lead into halftime and then increased the lead to eight points in the third quarter, but Amistad narrowed the gap to four by outscoring Morgan 14-10 in the period.

After trading baskets with Amistad throughout the fourth quarter, Morgan sealed the win by making free throws in crunch time. Nuzzo sank a free throw to put Morgan up 50-44 with less than 20 seconds left in the game, but Amistad countered with a 3-pointer and then called a timeout with three seconds to play. The Huskies got the ball to Fritz, who dribbled out the clock for the win.

Nuzzo led all scorers with 17 points and also grabbed 11 rebounds for a double-double. Sophomore Jason Cohen scored nine points by going 3-for-3 from downtown, while fellow sophomore posted 10 points with six rebounds.

“This was really a tremendous win for us. Amistad’s quickness gave us all kinds of problems, but we managed to hold on,” Head Coach Frank Rossi said. “We could’ve panicked late, but we made the plays we needed to make in the end. Nuzzo was great and really carried us late. I’m happy for him. He had a great week.”

Girls’ Basketball
