North Haven Girls’ Hoops Completes Sweep of Lauralton Hall; Track Teams Compete at SCC Developmental Meet

Girls’ Basketball

The North Haven girls’ basketball team played three games last week and came away with one win to move to 4-6 this season. North Haven earned a victory over Lauralton Hall, before taking defeats against Branford and Hamden in last week’s action.

North Haven hosted Lauralton Hall on Jan. 7 and prevailed 46-42. The Indians completed a season sweep of Lauralton Hall after having defeated the Crusaders 51-37 on Dec. 14. In the rematch, North Haven trailed 12-10 after the opening quarter, but outscored Lauralton 12-9 in the second quarter to bring a 22-21 lead into halftime. The game was tied 29-29 entering the fourth quarter, where the Indians outscored the Crusaders 17-13 to walk off the floor with the win. Sophomore Julia Bogen scored 14 points to lead North Haven. Fellow sophomore Carly Fresher had 10 points in the victory. Junior Laura Petrafesa scored 10 points, sophomore Olivia Stefanik had six points, and senior Leah Zeisner and junior Sarah Puzone added five points apiece for the Indians.

Two nights later, North Haven dropped a 41-39 decision in Branford. The Indians held a 30-22 lead entering the fourth quarter, but Branford outscored North Haven 19-9 during the final frame to come away with the win. Fresher scored 12 points, Bogen had eight points, Zeisner scored six points, and Petrafesa added five points.

Then on Jan. 11, the Indians hosted Hamden and lost by a 62-28 final in their SCC Quinnipiac Division opener.

Boys’ Basketball

The Indians took road losses against Amity, Fairfield Prep, and Cheshire last week. North Haven now stands at 2-6 on the year.

The Indians started off last week by losing a 60-46 decision at Amity in an SCC Housatonic Division game. North Haven fell behind 19-9 after the first quarter and trailed 30-19 at halftime. Amity increased its lead to 44-29 entering the fourth quarter on its way to the victory. Junior Jaden Watson scored 17 points to lead North Haven. Junior Dave Christoforo and senior Justin Shea both had eight points. Senior Mike Collins added seven points for the Indians, who dropped to 0-2 in divisional play.

Two nights later, the Indians took a 68-40 defeat to Fairfield Prep at Fairfield University. The Jesuits leaped out to a 24-10 lead in the first quarter and were up 34-21 at the break. Fairfield Prep outscored North Haven 25-4 during the third quarter to put away the win. Christoforo scored nine points for the Indians, while junior Bryce Charney had eight points. Collins added six points.

North Haven finished its week by taking a 68-38 defeat at Cheshire on Jan. 11. Cheshire led 21-3 after the first quarter and held a 29-7 halftime advantage on its way to defeating North Haven. Senior Jamorea Hooks scored 11 points, Collins had nine points, and Christoforo scored five points for the Indians.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Amity-North Haven-Cheshire girls’ ice hockey team faced off against Hamden at Lou Astorino Ice Arena on Jan. 12. The Blades took a 5-4 loss versus the Green Dragons and are now 3-8 on the year.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Indians took a 93-73 home loss against Amity at Gawrych Town Pool on Jan. 8. North Haven moved to 0-3 on the year with the defeat.

North Haven recorded a few first-place finishes versus Amity. Senior JP Stoeffler took first place in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.91 seconds and also finished first in the 100 backstroke at 1:06.15. Fellow senior Will McCleery claimed first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:15.40. Sophomore Cameron Cargan finished first in the 100 breaststroke (1:21.43), while fellow sophomore Joe Connor came in first place for the diving competition. North Haven’s 400 freestyle relay of Stoeffler, McCleery, junior Stephen Borrelli, and Cargan took first by swimming a time of 3:43.53.

Boys’ Indoor Track

North Haven saw a pair of runner-up performances when the team competed at SCC Developmental No. 2 last week. Senior Robert Farley finished second in the 55-meter hurdles, while junior Luke Maruca took second in the shot put at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on Jan. 7.

Farley ran a time of 8.27 seconds to claim second place in the 55 hurdles, and Maruca launched a toss of 45 feet-9.75 inches to grab second in shot put. Fellow junior Kyle Maruca took fourth place in the shot put with a throw of 43-3.5. Senior Eric Spignesi cleared 12 feet to finish fourth in the pole vault, while Farley placed seventh with a height of 10 feet.

North Haven’s other competitors in the shot put included junior Matt Mullen (7th, 42-4.5), junior Dominic Borrelli (9th, 41-2.75), junior Josh Blumenthal (11th, 39-9.5), Anthony Vigliotto (29th, 34-0.75), and Ryan Ziaks (45th, 29-10.5). Senior Jacob Wurm finished 12th in the pole vault by clearing 9-6. In the 1,600, sophomore Patrick Rourke finished 13th (4:55.65), senior Jackson Frank placed 37th (5:08.88), and senior Jobin Valiyaveettil finished 50th (5:13.79).

Senior Kevin Spencer finished 21st in the 55-meter hurdles (9.72) for North Haven. Junior Ethan Testa finished 23rd (9.95) in the event, and junior Zach Gabbs placed 48th (11.49). Testa also took 48th place in the 300-meter dash at 41.94. In the 600, senior Jack Opramolla finished 24th (1:33.45), freshman Mike DeVilliers came in 40th (1:36.93), and freshman Jack Pollard finished in 44th place (1:37.63). Senior John Crispi finished 35th in the long jump with a distance of 16 feet-3 inches.

The Indians will begin the postseason when they compete at the SCC West Sectional Championship this week. The meet takes place at Floyd Little Athletic Center at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 23.

Girls’ Indoor Track

The Indians were represented by several athletes at the second SCC Developmental meet of the season at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Jan. 8.

Senior Giselle Zumerchik finished fifth in the long jump with a distance of 15 feet-5 inches for North Haven. Fellow senior Camille Sahirul placed 11th in the event with a leap of 14-7.5. Sahirul also came in 10th place in the 300-meter dash by timing in at 45.98 seconds. Junior Makayla Mansur finished sixth in the pole vault with a height of 6 feet for the Indians.

Junior Courtney McFarland took 10th place in the shot put with a throw of 30 feet-2 inches. Freshman Emily Cocco finished 27th (24-10), while junior Shelah Price came in 48th place (20-11.75) in the event. Junior Elizabeth DeVaux finished 16th in the 55-meter hurdles at 10.74. In the long jump, freshman Lorelei King finished 19th (4-3), Makayla Greene came in 26th (4-0), and fellow freshman Ada Forbes finished in 32nd (4-0). Junior Reagan Forbes took 32nd place in the 1,600 (6:18.02), while fellow junior Sammy Curcio finished 33rd in the 55-meter dash (8.12). Senior Emily Casamento finished 52nd in the 600 with a mark of 2:09.13.

In the 4x400 relay, North Haven’s team of freshman Grace Finch, Forbes, Greene, and King placed 12th (4:51.19). The Indians’ 1,600 sprint medley relay of Forbes, Greene, Finch, and King finished 25th with a time of 5:00.94.

North Haven is competing at the SCC West Sectional Championship at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 4:30 p.m.
