The Guilford girls’ ice hockey team stands at 6-4 on the season after recording two wins in last week’s action.
Guilford earned a 5-1 victory over Branford-North Branford-Sheehan-Lyman Hall on Jan. 8. Daniella Vickerman and Maddie Epke each scored two goals for the Indians, while Audrey Rowan also lit the lamp in the win. Epke had two assists, and Olivia Gill and Vickerman added one assist apiece. Brielle Kendrioski made 30 saves to get the win in net for Guilford.
On Jan. 12, the Indians prevailed 5-2 against Hand-Coginchaug-Old Lyme. Epke scored three goals for a hat trick to led Guilford to the win. Vickerman and Jacquie Violette also scored goals, while Epke had an assist. Kendrioski made 24 stops between the pipes.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The Indians improved to 8-2 and qualified for states after taking down North Branford and the Eastern CT Eagles last week.
Guilford defeated North Branford by an 8-6 final on Jan. 9. John DeLucia, Jack Dacey, and Jake Watrous all scored two goals for Guilford in the victory. Connor Hagness and Steven Tortora also found the back of the net for the Indians.
Earning assists were Shea Thibault (2), Tortora, DeLucia, Watrous (2), and Hagness. Alex Attruia made 27 saves against 33 shots.
On Jan. 15, the Indians earned a 7-4 road win against the Eastern CT Eagles in a non-conference game at Connecticut College in New London. Guilford punched its ticket into the Division II State Tournament with the victory.
Boys’ Basketball
Guilford stands at 4-4 on the year following a split of two games last week.
The Indians routed Branford by a 68-38 margin on Jan. 7 to pick up their third straight win. Ian Slattery had 16 points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds for Guilford, while Colin Kellaher added 11 points.
Then on Jan. 12, the Indians took a 68-59 defeat versus Law.
Wrestling
Guilford moved to 7-5 on the season after picking up a recent win over Fairfield Prep and then taking three defeats in a quad-meet later in the week.
The Indians defeated Fairfield Prep by the final score of 69-10 on Jan. 8. Earning wins for Guilford were Anthony Bombgardner in the 126-pound weight class with a pin at 3:39; along with Peter Salib (via forfeit), George Sanderlin (138, pin at 1:05), Vin Mascola (145, 16-1 decision), Drew Koval (106, pin at 0:40), Vin Masotti (285, pin at 3:06), Brent Strand (152, 12-1 decision), Kyle Putnam (pin at 0:51), Ed Barlage (120, forfeit), Ian Rose (220, pin at 1:03), Keldon LaRose (138, forfeit), and Michael Salib (pin at 0:49).
Then on Jan. 12, Guilford hosted a quad-meet against Trumbull, Middletown, and Ledyard. The Indians lost a 45-27 decision against Trumbull, took a 37-36 defeat versus Ledyard, and lost a close contest to Middletown by the final score of 37-35.
Boys’ and Girls’ Fencing
The Guilford co-ed fencing program competed at the Morgan Invitational on Jan. 12, and the Indians saw both their boys’ and girls’ teams go undefeated on the day. The boys’ team defeated Hand (19-8), Morgan (18-9), Greenwich (20-7), and Hopkins (19-8) to improve to 9-0 on the year. The girls’ team also stands at 9-0 following its wins against Hand (20-7), Morgan (16-11), Greenwich (22-5), and Hopkins (15-3).
Julia Gangemi and AJ Raucci picked up their first varsity wins for Guilford at the meet. Épée fencer Bailey Meyers overcame a top competitor from Greenwich to come away with a victory. For boys’ foil, clutch wins by Mark McNamara and John LaFrance kept Guilford rolling at the Morgan Invitational. Meanwhile, Evans Shultes continues to win nearly every bout that he fences for Guilford. The girls’ foil team consistently dominated its competition at the meet, led by a notable performances from team captain Isabelle Labelle.
