Guilford Girls’ Lacrosse Looking to Bag Hunger

The Guilford High School (GHS) Girls’ Lacrosse Booster Club is launching the Let’s Bag Hunger! fundraiser and food drive in support of the Guilford Food Bank. For a $20 donation to the Booster Club, participants will receive a reusable GHS tote bag and, on their behalf, the lacrosse team will deliver grocery store-sized tote bags filled with non-perishable foods to the Guilford Food Bank.

The idea for this get-one, give-one program came from Claire Mackenzie, a junior who plays for the Indians’ girls’ lacrosse squad.

“In addition to helping the GHS girls’ lacrosse team, I thought family, friends, and neighbors would also like to support an important community resource like the Guilford Food Bank,” said Mackenzie. “It seemed like a win-win for everybody.”

The fundraiser is running through Friday, March 1 in an effort to boost the significant post-holiday drop in donations to the Guilford Food Bank.

“We thank Claire for her thoughtfulness, initiative, and creativity,” Guilford girls’ lacrosse Head Coach Wendy Epke said. “It’s great to see the players working together to raise money for the team while supporting the larger Guilford community.”

The money raised by the GHS Girls’ Lacrosse Booster Club will be used to pay for extra advantages and costs not covered by the school district, including assistant coaches, equipment, and preseason training activities. In addition to the team and the Guilford Food Bank, the campaign also supports the green initiatives of the GHS Environmental Club and the Guilford Garden Club, which are encouraging residents to switch from plastic bags to reusable tote bags.
