01/10/2019 11:00 PMNorth Haven High School graduate Jill Johnson recorded a major milestone when she scored the 1,000th point of her collegiate career as a member of the Albertus Magnus College women’s basketball team on Jan. 8. Johnson, who had a storied career with the Indians before graduating from North Haven in 2015, scored 22 points when Albertus Magus earned an 80-50 victory versus Anna Maria College on its home floor in New Haven.
Johnson, a senior guard, reached the 1,000-point plateau by converting a three-point play with 5:50 remaining in the first quarter. Johnson made a layup, was fouled, and then hit the free throw to score her 1,000th point.
Johnson shot 9-of-16 from the floor to go with two rebounds and three assists when Albertus Magnus routed Anna Maria College in its Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener. She went on to score 12 points in the Falcons’ 77-63 loss at St. Joseph’s (Maine) on Jan. 10. Three days later, Johnson poured in 20 points to go with five assists and three steals during a 91-57 home win against Rivier University. Albertus has an overall record of 14-2 and is 2-1 in GNAC play this year.
Johnson played for the North Haven girls’ basketball team for four seasons, earning All-Southern Connecticut Conference Oronoque Division honors four times, All-SCC accolades three times, and also winning the Indians’ Most Valuable Player Award three times. She scored the 1,000th point of her high school career in a game against East Haven on Feb. 6, 2015. Johnson finished her career at North Haven with 1,157 points after leading the Indians to 11 victories, their first SCC Tournament victory in program history, and a berth in the Class L State Tournament during her senior season. She also earned spots on the New Haven Tap-Off Club Team and the New Haven Register All-Area Team that year.
At Albertus Magnus, Johnson played in 22 games for the Falcons as a freshman and then started all 26 games in her sophomore season, earning the team’s Most Improved Player Award. She averaged 10.4 points, 3.2 assists, and 2.6 steals per game on the year.
As a junior last year, Johnson, a psychology major, started all 25 games for the Falcons on her way to solidifying a spot on the All-GNAC Third Team. Johnson averaged 16.1 points, 3.6 steals, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.7 assists for the season. This year, Johnson has started all 15 games for Albertus and is averaging 20.4 points per game to go with 3.4 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 2.5 steals.
