North Branford Girls’ Hoops Beats Valley Regional; Glenn Takes 2nd in Long Jump at League Meet

Girls’ Basketball

The T-Birds’ girls’ basketball team split a pair of road games last week to move to 4-3 this season. North Branford lost a non-conference matchup at Hand, before defeating Shoreline Conference foe Valley Regional later in the week.

On Jan. 2, North Branford took a 66-46 defeat versus Southern Connecticut Conference opponent Hand. Two days later, the Thunderbirds traveled to Deep River to take on Valley Regional and came home with a 48-36 victory for their fourth win on the year.

Boys’ Basketball

North Branford lost contests against East Hampton and Valley Regional in last week’s matchups.

On Dec. 29, the T-Birds lost to East Hampton by the score of 65-48 in a road game. Junior Bret Fee scored 10 points, while senior Dylan Martinik and junior Mike Sitro finished with seven points each for the T-Birds.

Then on Jan. 4, North Branford took a 91-64 home loss against Valley Regional. Sitro scored 18 points for the Thunderbirds (0-6), who saw junior Ronnie Longo contribute 11 points off the bench. Senior Cameron DiPentima had 10 points, and Fee added eight points in the game.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Thunderbirds took a 3-1 defeat to E.O. Smith at Northford Ice Pavilion on Jan. 5. North Branford has a record of 2-3-1 on the season.

Senior Sean McKee scored North Branford’s goal against E.O. Smith. Junior Nick Vecchio had the assist on the goal.

Girls’ Indoor Track

Mackenzie Glenn took second place in the long jump for North Branford at Shoreline Conference League Meet No. 1 last week. Glenn, a junior, also finished fourth in the 300 at the meet, which was held at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on Jan. 3.

Glenn reached a distance of 16 feet-1.25 inches to claim second in the long jump. In the 300, Glenn’s time of 45.27 earned her a fourth-place finish. North Branford also saw stellar performances from sophomore Riley Kendall, who finished third in the 600 (1:55.20); senior Ana Pavic, who took fifth in the 600 at 45.93 seconds; sophomore Nadia Becker, who placed eighth in the 55-meter dash with a time of 8.19 seconds; and senior Gillian Penna, who finished in 10th in the 55-meter hurdles at 10.91.

Also competing for North Branford at the meet were sophomore Onna Gott in the 1,000 (11­th, 3:43.29), senior Caitlin May in the 1,000 (19th, 3:59.12), senior Sam DeAngelo in the 1,000 (26th, 4:06.37), sophomore Emily Olsen in the 600 (18th, 2:16.45), freshman Regan Leete in the 1,600 (16th, 7:02.46), sophomore Sofia Votto in the 1,600 (18th, 7:58.26), junior Erika Roof in the 300 (20th, 50.82), sophomore Felicia Didiano in the 300 (24th, 51.71), freshman Grace Marra in the 300 (31st, 54.41) and 55 (40th, 9.35), sophomore Ashlee Amendola in the 55 (30th,8.97), and sophomore Gabrielle Gibilisco in the 55 (36th, 9.10).

In relays, the T-Birds’ 4x200 squad of Becker, Pavic, Penna, and Glenn finished third (1:56.61); the 4x800 team of Gott, May, Leete, and Kendall placed fourth (11:49.78); and the 1,600 sprint medley group of Roof, Amendola, Gibilisco, and DeAngelo took ninth with a time of 5:36.28.

Boys’ Indoor Track

North Branford saw five top-10 finishes at the first Shoreline Conference League Meet last week.

The T-Birds’ top individual finish came from sophomore Roberto Didiano, who took third place in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:19.15. Senior Michael Rabuffo placed fourth in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet-4 inches, while senior Jeremy Conboy hit a distance of 18 feet-8.5 inches in the long jump to take sixth place. Junior Joe DeLucia placed seventh in the 600 with a time of 1:33.39, and senior Alvin Chan took ninth in the 1,000 at 3:03.72.

Other competitors for the T-Birds included Rabuffo in the 55 (11th, 7.19), Conboy in the 55 (14th, 7.32), senior Hunter Boni in the 55 (39th, 7.99), sophomore Giacomo Didiano in the 55 (48th, 8.70), junior Freddie Little in the 300 (11th, 41.73), sophomore Nicholas Tranquilli in the 300 (29th, 47.29), senior Noah Taylor in the 1,000 (31st, 3:48.78), sophomore Conor Leete in the 1,600 (17th, 5:44.71), and freshman Zachary Chittenden in the 1,600 (20th, 5:52.79).

For relays, North Branford’s 4x200 group of Rabuffo, Conboy, Little, and DeLucia finished in sixth with a time of 1:42.88. The 1,600 sprint medley squad of Boni, Giacomo Didiano, Chan, and Roberto Didiano placed 10th at 4:37.66.
