Marshall Scores Career-High 40 in Triple-Double Performance

Girls’ Basketball

The Westbrook girls’ basketball team played two games last week and came away with a split to move to 4-3 on the year.

On Jan. 2, the Knights notched a 58-43 victory at Old Saybrook behind a triple-double performance from senior Savannah Marshall, who had 40 points, 16 rebounds, and 12 steals on the night. Marshall’s 40-point performance marked a career-high total for the senior captain. Olivia Archer had 10 rebounds for Westbrook, and Lexi Koplas played smart defense while having four fouls throughout the second half. Gabby Ehlert gave the Knights a great defensive effort in the victory.

Two days later, Westbrook hosted Portland and lost a 49-31 contest against the Highlanders.

Boys’ Basketball

The Knights took two defeats last week and are now 2-5 this season.

On Jan. 2, Westbrook lost to Old Saybrook by a 53-36 final on the road. The Knights got out to a good start and were up 29-23 at halftime. However, Old Saybrook’s defense contained Westbrook in the second half as the Rams went on to the win. Seth Caslin scored 14 points and had five rebounds, while Jack Naccarrato added 11 points and five boards. Ben Schrek hauled in six rebounds for the Knights.

Two days later, Westbrook traveled to Portland, where the team dropped a 53-38 contest against the Highlanders. Naccarato scored 19 points, Brenden Engels had seven points, and Schrek collected boards for Westbrook.

Girls’ Indoor Track

Westbrook competed at Shoreline Conference League Meet No. 1 at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on Jan. 3. The Knights scored 14 points and finished in ninth place at the meet.

Sophomore Elizabeth Gallagher claimed second place in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.95 seconds for the Knights. Westbrook’s 1,600 sprint medley relay of Gallagher, freshman Riley Metcalfe, sophomore Brooke Neri, and senior Avery Bauman finished fourth by posting a time of 5:02.29. The Knights’ 4x800 relay of sophomore Cierra Brundage, fellow sophomore Margueritte Bartlett, Neri, and Bauman finished in sixth place with a time of 12:06.58. Bauman also took sixth place in the 1,000 by timing in at 3:30.44

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Knights were at Floyd Little Athletic Center to participate in last week’s Shoreline Conference League Meet. Westbrook scored two points to finish tied for Hale-Ray in 11th place at the meet. Senior Michael Gingras took fifth place in the pole vault clearing a height of 10 feet to tally the Knights’ two points on the day.
