Falivene Pins Down Five Wins on the Week

Senior Ben Falivene recently competed for the Warriors in a pair of dual-meets that took place at Morgan and Amity. Falivene scored five wins and took two losses between the two meets.

On Dec. 29, Falivene competed at the Morgan Duals in Clinton, where he earned three wins and took one loss in the 285-pound division. Falivene pinned Daniel Belson of Suffield-Windsor Locks at the 50-second mark in his first match. In his second match, he pinned Nick Gerry of Maloney in just 30 seconds. Falivene lost his third match by a 4-1 decision against Jesuan Claudio Lugo of Norwich Free Academy. Then in his final bout, he won pin at 3:45 over Brandon Yaw Kwanteng of Maloney.

On Jan. 5, Falivene wrestled at the Amity Duals in Woodbridge, finishing the day with two wins and one defeat. In the first round, Falivene pinned Anthony Martinez of Barlow at the 1:57 mark. He then pinned James Nightengale of Ridgefield at 3:01 in his second match. In Falivene’s last match, he lost by pin against Jaylin Houston of New Haven.

Girls’ Basketball

Valley Regional earned a lopsided win versus Hale-Ray that was sandwiched between two defeats last week. The Warriors are now 3-5 on the season.

On Dec. 29, Valley hosted East Hampton and took a 38-25 loss against the Bellringers. The Warriors struggled offensively while dealing with East Hampton’s tough defense. East Hampton outscored the Warriors 8-4 in the first quarter and was up 17-13 at halftime. The Bellringers won the third quarter 9-8 and then pulled away by outscoring Valley 12-4 in the final frame. Senior captain Lexie Finnerty led the Warriors with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Addison Marchese provided seven points and five assists.

On Jan. 2, the Warriors recorded a 38-8 blowout at Hale-Ray in a game that saw them hold the Noises scoreless during two of the four quarters. Finnerty scored 24 points by shooting 11-for-15 from the floor. Senior captain Heather Jones had six rebounds, two assists, and two steals, while fellow senior captain Annie Cooper handed out five assists and had a pair of boards. Valley took a decisive lead with an 11-0 spurt in the first quarter, after which the Warriors outscored Hale-Ray 13-6 during the second quarter. Valley also won the third (10-2) and fourth quarters (4-0) on its way to the 30-point victory.

Two days later, Valley hosted North Branford and took a 48-36 defeat. North Branford held a 21-18 halftime advantage and then outscored Valley in the third (10-6) and fourth quarters (17-12) to come away with the win. Alena Crosby had eight points, four rebounds, and two assists. Addison Marchese recorded seven points, three boards, and one assist for the Warriors.

Gymnastics

Valley Regional competed in a few meets in recent action. The Warriors notched a pair of wins and dropped four decisions during the stretch.

On Dec. 27, Valley went up against Mercy, Haddam-Killingworth, and Law. The Warriors recorded a score of 124.05 to defeat Haddam-Killingworth (63.0), while taking losses against Mercy (132.20) and Law (125.95). Senior captain Lily O’Neil scored an 8.3 in the vault, a 6.5 on the bars, a 7.1 on the balance beam, and a 7.1 on the floor for Valley. Freshman Sarah Cole turned in a score of 8.2 on the vault, an 8.0 on bars, an 8.2 on the beam, and a 7.2 on the floor. Fellow freshman Leah Frantz scored an 8.2 for the vault, a 7.35 on bars, an 8.1 on the beam, and an 8.05 on the floor. Freshman Grace Jacaruso tallied a total of 8.25 on vault, a 5.5 on the bars, a 7.3 on beam, and an 8.05 on the floor. Freshman Scarlet Joplin notched 7.7 on the vault and 4.7 on bars, while Erin Ward earned a score of 8.15 on the bars.

On Dec. 29, the Warriors competed against Mercy, H-K, and Stonington. Valley finished with a score of 97.75 to defeat H-K (74.40), while losing decisions against Mercy (130.30) and Stonginton (118.20). Cole scored an 7.85 on the vault, a 6.25 on the bars, an 8.1 on beam, and 8.05 on the floor. Frantz scored a 7.8 on vault, a 7.5 on the bars, a 7.0 on beam, and a 7.75 on the floor. O’Neil turned in a score of 7.4 on the vault, a 6.3 on the bars, a 7.0 on the beam, and a 7.75 on the floor. Ward totaled a score of 7.9 on the bars for Valley Regional.
