Guilford Boys’ Basketball, Hockey Have Huge Weeks

Boys’ Basketball

The Guilford boys’ basketball team had a busy stretch that saw the Indians play four games last week. Guilford came out on the winning end in three of those games to even its record at 3-3 on the year.

Guilford routed non-conference squad Whitney Tech by the final score of 85-45 on Dec. 27. Colin Kellaher scored 14 points for the Indians, while Ian Slattery added 12 points in the victory.

Two days later, the Indians dropped a 78-46 decision versus Southern Connecticut Conference opponent Hillhouse. Guilford was only down 31-29 at halftime, before Hillhouse opened it up in the second half. Kellaher led the Indians by scoring 20 points in the defeat.

Then on Jan. 3, Guilford earned an 85-74 double-overtime win against non-conference opponent Wilcox Tech. Once again, Kellaher topped the stat sheet by netting 33 points for the Indians.

The Indians closed out the week with a 67-52 victory over SCC foe West Haven on Jan. 4. Kellaher poured in 27 points to help Guilford defeat the Blue Devils.

Girls’ Basketball

The Indians picked up their first win of the year last week and also took a loss to move to 1-4 this season.

On Jan. 2, Guilford defeated Lauralton Hall 45-28 to put its first victory in the books. The next day, Guilford took a 58-38 defeat against Cross.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

Guilford improved to 6-2 on the season by sweeping all four of its games last week. The Indians scored a combined 31 goals between their four victories.

The Indians edged out the Eastern Connecticut Eagles by a 9-8 final in overtime on Dec. 27. John DeLucia capped off a hat trick by netting the game-winning goal in OT for Guilford. Jack Dacey and Shea Thibault both scored a pair of goals, while Connor Hagness and Jake Watrous each added one goal in the win.

Two days later, Guilford routed Yarmouth, Maine by a 7-1 final.

The Indians continued lighting the lamp when they notched a 10-6 win over St. Joseph on Jan. 2. Dacey scored three goals and handed out five assists for Guilford. DeLucia also had a hat trick to go with three assists in the victory. Watrous scored two goals, plus Thibault and Greg Litvyn added goals for the Indians. Steven Tortora dished off a pair of assists, and Hagness also had an assist.

Then on Jan. 5, Guilford earned a 5-4 victory versus West Haven. Dacey and DeLucia scored two goals apiece, and Hagness had the game-winner for Guilford. DeLucia, Thibault, Tortora, and Mike LeTourneau each had one assist.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Branford-Guilford boys’ swimming and diving team hosted Amity for a meet at the Walsh Intermediate School last week. The Hornets took a 94-66 defeat against the Spartans on Jan. 3.

Wrestling

The Indians stand at 6-2 this winter following a busy stretch last week. Guilford earned three victories in dual-meet action and then claimed first place at an invitational meet.

On Dec. 29, the Indians competed in the Whippet Duals at Windham High School, where they won two of their three matches on the day. Guilford bested Berlin 52-22, dominated East Lyme 72-9, and lost a 43-35 contest against Waterford.

Then on Jan. 3, Guilford defeated Branford by the score of 42-34. Drew Koval won via pin at the 16-second mark of his 106-pound bout for Guilford. Also earning wins were Ed Barlage (113, pin at 5:36), Anthony Bombgardner (126, pin at 5:36), Keldon LaRose (132, pin at 2:29), George Sanderlin (138, pin at 5:41), Vin Mascola (145, pin at 1:05), and Aiden Ghiroli (160, pin at 3:43).

Then on Jan. 5, Guilford earned a first-place finish at the Lawless Invite. The Indians scored 172.5 points to edge out Canton (162) for top honors at the meet. Bombgardner finished first in his bracket for Guilford. LaRose, Sanderlin, and Mascola earned runner-up honors, as did Rob Masotti (152) and Ian Rose (220). Placing third for the Indians were Koval, Barlage, Ghiroli, and Brent Strand.
