Girls’ Basketball

The Westbrook girls’ basketball team scored a lopsided 64-17 victory against non-conference opponent Achievement First on Dec. 27. The Knights traveled to Hartford to take on the Royals and cruised to the win to improve to 3-2 on the season.

Westbrook saw senior captain Savannah Marshall and fellow senior Gabby Ehlert both record season-high totals for points and steals in the victory. Marshall scored 26 points and snagged 12 steals, while Ehlert had 18 points to go with 10 steals for the Knights.

Westbrook came out strong and held a 21-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Knights continued applying pressure in the second quarter, where they outscored the Royals 16-2. Westbrook won the third quarter by a 14-10 margin and then held the Royals scoreless during the fourth quarter, while adding 13 points.

After her team built its commanding lead in the first half, Head Coach Kelly Landino was able to get several JV players into the game, including freshmen Sadie Susi and Jami Sacco, who scored eight and four points, respectively. Coach Landino believes that their time on the floor in this game will potentially pay off down the road as the Knights look for more depth on the bench.

“It was a good game to get our JV kids some varsity floor time, as we need them to step up soon due to our very low numbers. I have high expectations, and I’m asking a lot of the freshmen, but I also know that I am not asking for anything they don’t already have inside of them,” Coach Landino said. “This is our only game over Christmas break, so we are trying to get rest, while also staying focused, as a busy January is coming our way.”

Boys’ Basketball

The Westbrook boys’ basketball team lost a pair of non-conference games in recent action. The Knights have a record of 2-3 this winter.

On Dec. 22, Westbrook hosted Plainville and took a 51-37 defeat against the Blue Devils. Sophomore Jack Naccarato recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Knights. Junior Seth Caslin led Westbrook in scoring with 14 points, while senior Benjamin Schrek led the way on the boards by grabbing 12 rebounds.

On Dec. 27, Westbrook traveled to Meriden to match up against Wilcox Tech. The Knights dropped a 75-61 decision against the Indians.
