Girls’ Basketball

The Hand girls’ basketball team earned its second win of the year by posting a victory versus Southern Connecticut Conference opponent Guilford on Dec. 20. The Tigers notched a 47-31 home win against the Indians to raise their record to 2-1 in the 2018-’19 season.

Sara Wohlgemuth recorded a double-double by scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds for Hand in its win over Guilford. Taya Akers knocked down three shots from long range to score nine points in the game. Julia Kuhn added seven points, six steals, and five rebounds for Head Coach Tim Tredwell’s squad

Hand stormed out of the gates and took a quick 9-0 lead against Guilford, although the Indians battled back to get the lead down to one at the end of the first quarter. Guilford’s defense caused problems for the Tigers in the second quarter, and the Indians also their groove on offense, resulting in a 21-20 edge for the visitors heading into the locker room. However, Guilford struggled offensively in the second half, while Hand broke out of its slump to outscore the Indians 17-5 during the third quarter for 37-26 advantage entering the fourth. The Tigers increased the lead in the final frame on their way to the 16-point win.

“Tonight had all the makings to be a really good game, with two young rival teams that are trying to find their way early in the season. Guilford’s defense was really stout, and we struggled to execute offensively. I felt like we were getting the effort we needed on both ends, but we were really going to have to focus on the details if we wanted to get this win,” Head Coach Tim Tredwell said. “Julia Kuhn was a pest defensively. Maddie Thomas was a rock inside. Anna Beccia did a ton of dirty work that won’t show up in the stats, but opened things up for her teammates. Taya Akers stretched the defense.”

Boys’ Basketball

Hand went on a run in the third quarter and held a 39-29 lead midway through the frame. Guilford rallied to make it 40-37 entering the fourth quarter, but the Tigers were able to increase their lead to eight during the final period, and then hung on for the victory. Pierson Chapman scored 14 points, while Ethan Haberman had 11 points for Hand in the win.
