The Morgan girls’ basketball team squared off against Portland and Lyman Hall last week and came away from the slate with a win and a loss. The Huskies have a record of 3-1 this year.

On Dec. 17, Morgan traveled to Portland, where the Huskies picked up a 51-50 victory over the Highlanders. The Huskies jumped out to an early lead and hung on for the win as Portland tried to mount a comeback on its home court.

Morgan was bolstered by strong offensive effort from sophomore Catie Donadio, who scored 20 points to go along with nine rebounds, five assists, one block, and one steal in the victory. Senior Becca Shamp led the charge on the boards with 11 rebounds, and she also had two points, three blocks, and two assists. Junior Leah McComiskey added 14 points, six rebounds, five blocks, and two assists, while fellow junior Rachel Lehn scored eight to go with six boards, one assist, and one steal. Senior Joelle Vuilleumier notched six rebounds, two assists, and one steal for Morgan.

The Huskies started the game strong by taking a 21-12 lead in the first quarter. The Highlanders cut into the lead by outscoring Morgan 15-11 in the second. Portland had the advantage in the third quarter and took a 42-41 lead into the final frame, but Morgan won the fourth quarter by a 10-8 margin to eke out the one-point win.

Two days later, the Huskies lost a 56-33 decision at Lyman Hall in a non-conference game.

Boys’ Basketball

The Huskies were victorious in each of their games last week to improve to 2-1 early on this year. Morgan defeated both Portland and East Hampton by double digits in last week’s action.

On Dec. 17, Morgan scored a big victory with a 64-40 drubbing against Portland in a home game. The win marked the first victory of the season for the Huskies and also their first win with new Head Coach Frank Rossi, who was previously the head coach of the boys’ basketball team at Daniel Hand High School in Madison.

Three days later, the Huskies hosted East Hampton and defeated the Bellringers by the final score of 55-43 for their second win of the year.
