Girls’ Basketball

The Hand girls’ basketball team secured its first triumph of the season by defeating Norwich Free Academy (NFA) last week. The Tigers improved to 1-1 on the year with the win.

Hand dispatched NFA by a 58-49 score in a non-conference contest on Dec. 18. Sara Wohlgemuth netted a career-high 30 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the field, including four baskets from long range. Maddie Thomas totaled seven points and five rebounds, while Taya Akers and Brooke Salutari each hit a pair of threes for the Tigers. All eight athletes who played in the game for Hand made their way onto the scoresheet.

The Tigers sprinted out of the gate by taking a 9-0 lead against NFA. Hand finished the quarter on a 10-4 run, including a buzzer-beating three by Salutari, to hold a 19-4 advantage after one. NFA outscored Tigers 13-11 in the second period to head into the locker room down by 13. Hand stretched its lead to 17 points in the third quarter, bolstered by a pair of threes from Akers. NFA outscored the Tigers 22-14 in the final frame, but Hand had just enough in the tank to walk away with the nine-point win.

“Losing [to East Haven] on Opening Night was very difficult. We didn’t play particularly well and, to compound the issue, we didn’t have another game for a week. So, after going against each other all week, I think the kids were itching to go against someone else and show that we’re better than what we showed against East Haven,” Head Coach Tim Tredwell said. “NFA is traditionally one of the strongest programs in the state, so we knew we were going to have to be at our best. While there were some defensive breakdowns typical of a young team, I thought we were very efficient offensively, and our intensity was great. Everybody in a Hand uniform brought a ton of energy, and that helped carry us to our first win.”
