Morgan Girls’ Hoops Nets Two Wins During First Week; Cimino and Bradley Both Place 2nd at Shelton Invitational

Girls’ Basketball

The Morgan girls’ basketball team stormed out to a 2-0 start to its season by posting a pair of victories last week. The Huskies earned wins against Shoreline Conference opponents Old Lyme and Valley Regional during the first week of the winter campaign.

On Dec. 11, Morgan hosted Old Lyme and defeated the Wildcats by the final score of 40-34. The Huskies had to rally after falling behind at halftime, but managed to eke out a six-point win on the strength of some solid defense in the second half, especially during the fourth quarter.

Morgan spread the scoring around in its victory over Old Lyme. Junior Leah McComiskey scored 11 points to go with six rebounds, three assists, and one steal for the Huskies. Senior Becca Shamp led the team in rebounds with nine, and she also had a block. Junior Rachel Lehn and Shamp both scored seven points in the win. Senior Kylee Clifton had a great night on defense by snagging eight steals to complement her six rebounds. Senior Joelle Vuilleumier had five steals and seven rebounds, while sophomore Catie Donadio turned in well-rounded performance by recording five points, five steals, and five rebounds on the night.

The Huskies fell behind 14-10 after the first quarter and trailed 25-20 at halftime. In the third quarter, Morgan started its comeback by outscoring Old Lyme 11-7 to trail 32-31 entering the fourth. In the fourth quarter, the Huskies locked down on defense and held the Wildcats to just two points on their way to a 40-34 victory.

Two days later, the Huskies scored a big home win over Valley Regional by the final tally of 55-39. Morgan outscored Valley 22-10 in the first quarter on its way to the double-digit win. Valley won the second quarter 11-6, but Morgan outscored the Warriors 27-18 the rest of the way to emerge victorious.

Donadio went off for 22 points to go with six boards, four assists, and four steals. McComiskey had 17 points and three assists for the Huskies. Shamp scored seven points, hauled in five rebounds, and had one blocked shot, while Clifton had eight points, seven assists, five steals, and two blocks.

Boys’ Basketball

Morgan was on the road to face Valley Regional in its season opener last week. The Huskies dropped a 57-51 decision against the Warriors on Dec. 13.

Valley outscored the Huskies 12-5 in the first quarter and then held a 30-21 lead at halftime. Morgan cut the Warriors’ lead to 44-42 by outscoring them 21-14 in the third quarter, but Valley won the final frame by a 13-9 margin to come away with the victory.

Wrestling

The Morgan wrestling team kicked off its season by competing at the Shelton Invitational last week. The Huskies took eighth place overall as a team by scoring 82 points in the tournament.

Several wrestlers contributed to the Huskies’ point total at the meet, including sophomore Louis Bradley, who earned second place in the 132-pound division. Bradley took second place after losing by a 3-2 decision against Peter Kane of the Green Farms Academy in the final bout. Bradley advanced to the final with a first-round bye, a win by pin at the 1:18 mark over Jesse Johnson of Notre Dame-West Haven in the quarterfinals, and a another pinfall victory at 1:39 over Josh Cala of Amity in the semis.

Also earning second place for Morgan was senior Anthony Cimino, who lost 9-0 decision versus Griffin Seyfried of Green Farms Academy in the final match of the 138-pound weight class. Cimino earned a first-round bye, won by pin at 3:29 over Luis Stephenson of Notre Dame-West Haven in the quarterfinals, and defeated Cole Johnson of Amity by a 14-3 major decision in the semis to reach the title bout.

Sophomore Kyle Carse took third place in the 106-pound division by winning a 4-2 decision against Porter Schexnayder of Notre Dame-West Haven in the third-place bout. Carse lost his first round match by an 11-5 decision against Ethan Titus of Canton. Then in the consolation bracket, Carse defeated Evan Cavicchia of Weston in the quarters by pinfall at 1:19, after which he beat Colin Boufford of Amity by a 4-1 decision in the semifinal round.

In the 126-pound division, junior Josh Fragola defeated Amir Jarad by pin at the 1:37 mark in the third-place bout. Fragola received a first-round bye, defeated Khaled Jared of Amity in the quarters, and then lost to Ayan Mumtaz of Shelton in an 11-7 decision in the semifinal matchup. In the consolation bracket, Fragola defeated Ryker Bahre by pinfall at the 50-second mark to get into the third-place match.
