North Haven Girls’ Hoops Off to 2-1 Start; Boys’ Hockey Splits First Two

Girls’ Basketball

The North Haven girls’ basketball team tipped off the 2018-’19 winter season by claiming victory in two of its first three games last week. The Indians took a loss to Branford in their season opener, but came right back to notch wins against Lauralton Hall and Stratford for a 2-1 start to the year.

North Haven hosted Branford for its first game of the season on Dec. 11 and dropped a 57-36 decision versus the Hornets. Junior Giuliana Ciarleglio scored 13 points, and sophomore Julia Bogen had 10 points for the Indians. Senior Leah Zeisner added eight points in the defeat.

Then on Dec. 14, North Haven traveled to Milford to face Lauralton Hall for its road opener. The Indians recorded their first win of the season by earning a 51-37 victory versus the Crusaders.

The following morning, the Indians were home to play Stratford in a non-conference game at Fred Kelly Gymnasium. North Haven won the matchup by the final score of 63-38 to move to 2-1 on the season. The Indians outscored Stratford 14-4 in the first quarter and never looked back on their way to the convincing victory. North Haven went on to win the second (17-12), third (15-10), and fourth (17-12) quarters for a 25-point triumph over the Red Devils. Mia Antonino scored 15 points to lead the Indians’ offense. Junior Laura Petrafesa netted 10 points, while Bogan and fellow junior Carly Fresher both scored eight points for North Haven. Sophomores Olivia Stefanik and Sarah Puzone chipped in with six points apiece in the victory.

This year, North Haven is competing in the SCC Quinnipiac Division with Hamden, Guilford, Shelton, and Sacred Heart Academy. The Indians will host Lyman Hall for their next game at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 21.

Boys’ Basketball

The Indians are hitting the court to start off a new season this week.

North Haven is playing a road game against Southern Connecticut Conference opponent West Haven at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 18. Then on Thursday, Dec. 20, the Indians will be back on the road to face Xavier for another SCC game at 7 p.m.

North Haven is competing in the SCC Housatonic Division with Cross, Amity, Sheehan, and Lyman Hall this winter. Last year, the Indians finished with an overall record of 13-10, while qualifying for both the SCC and Division III State tournaments. North Haven also recorded a win against Woodstock Academy in the first round of states.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

North Haven started off a new year by earning a split in its first two games of the campaign last week. The Indians took an overtime loss against the Lyman Hall co-op squad, before posting a victory versus Hall-Southington.

North Haven faced off against Southern Connecticut Conference foe Lyman Hall/Haddam-Killingworth/Coginchaug in a road game at Northford Ice Pavilion on Dec. 13. The Indians lost a 5-4 contest in overtime against the Trojans to begin the year.

Two days later, the Indians hosted Hall-Southington for a non-conference contest at Northford Ice Pavilion. North Haven doubled up the opposition by a 4-2 score to put its first one in the win column this season.

North Haven is coming off a year that saw the team finish with an overall record of 10-10-1. The Indians qualified for the Division II State Tournament, where they took a loss against Glastonbury in the first round.

During this week’s action, North Haven are facing Branford on the road at Northford Ice Pavilion on Wednesday, Dec. 19 at 4 p.m., after which the Indians will take on Westhill-Stamford at Terry Conners Ice Rink in Stamford at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Amity-North Haven-Cheshire (A-NH-C) girls’ ice hockey squad took a pair of defeats in Southern Connecticut Conference action last week. The Blades have a record 0-3 in the early goings this winter.

On Dec. 12, the Blades lost a 3-0 home game against Notre Dame-Fairfield/Law/Foran/Weston/Pomperaug at Lou Astorino Ice Arena in Hamden. Senior goalie Caitlin Ranciato made 26 saves for the Blades in the contest.

Three days later, A-NH-C was on the road to face Guilford at DiLungo Rink in East Haven, where the Blades dropped a 4-3 decision. Sophomore Caroline Cadelina scored a goal to give the Blades an early 1-0 lead, after which Guilford scored two goals to close out the first period and take a 2-1 advantage. Guilford increased its lead to 4-1 by netting the first two goals of the second period, before the Blades answered with a goal by junior Haley Cable to make it a 4-2 game through two. Senior captain Shannon Reilly and freshman Mia Dow had the assists on the goal. In the third period, Andrea DelVecchio scored a goal from fellow senior captains Meaghan Hogan and Reilly to cut the deficit to 4-3. However, despite a valiant comeback effort from the Blades, Guilford hung on for the one-goal win.

This week, the Blades will host West Haven-Sacred Heart Academy at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 19, followed by a home game versus Suffield-Ellington-Enfield-Granby-Canton on Saturday, Dec. 22. Both games take place on the Blades’ home rink at Lou Astorino Ice Arena.
