H-K’s Hoops Teams Start Seasons; Ice Hockey Edges North Haven in OT

Boys’ Basketball

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ basketball team began the 2018-’19 winter season by squaring off against Portland last week. H-K took a 65-48 defeat versus the Highlanders in their opener on Dec. 13.

The Cougars fell behind by 22 points, before rallying to cut the lead to 10 with five minutes remaining in the game. However, Portland was able to make a few baskets down the stretch and hung on for the victory. Matt Wills led H-K with 16 points and 11 rebounds in the loss. Jimmy McGoey added 11 points and 15 rebounds for the Cougars.

Girls’ Basketball

The H-K girls’ basketball squad started off its year by playing three games last week. The Cougars dropped decisions against East Hampton, Portland, and Westbrook during the first week of play.

H-K took a 59-22 loss versus East Hampton in its first game of the season on Dec. 11. Two days later, the Cougars lost to Portland by the score of 75-33. H-K finished the week by facing Westbrook on Dec. 15 and lost a 58-44 decision against the Knights.

Last winter, Head Coach Scott Medeiros’s squad finished with an overall record of 9-14, qualifying for both the Shoreline Conference Tournament and the Class M State Tournament.

Ice Hockey

The Lyman Hall/H-K/Coginchaug co-op ice hockey team kicked off its campaign by posting a thrilling overtime victory versus North Haven last week.

The Trojans defeated North Haven by the final score of 5-4 in overtime on Dec. 13. Matt Pettit scored two goals, including the game-winner in OT, in the victory. Kyle Roberts netted a pair of goals, while Aidan Weir added a goal for Lyman Hall/H-K/Coginchaug.

Head Coach Rich Minnix’s club finished with a mark of 14-6 for the regular season to reach both the SCC/SWC Division III Tournament and the Division III State Tournament last season.
