Branford Girls’ Hoops Beats North Haven in Opener; Wrestling Finishes 2nd at Ludlowe Invitational

Girls’ Basketball

The Branford girls’ basketball team began its winter campaign with a road game against Southern Connecticut Conference opponent North Haven last week. The Hornets recorded a convincing win in their season opener by earning a 57-36 victory against the Indians.

Sophia Araneo had a big game that saw the senior score 25 points to lead Branford in the win. Junior Karly King and sophomore Gabriella Lucertini both scored 12 points for the Hornets. Junior Lily Moore-Markey had six points, while fellow junior Celia Turbert added four points.

This year, Branford is competing in the SCC Hammonasset Division with Mercy, Career, Sheehan, and Law. Last season, the Hornets finished with an overall record of 8-14, including a win against Naugatuck in the first round of the Class L State Tournament.

This week, the Hornets will host Sacred Heart Academy at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 18 and then face East Haven on the road on Thursday, Dec. 20 at 7 p.m.

Boys’ Basketball

The Hornets are hitting the floor for the start of a new season this week.

Branford will play a road game against non-conference opponent Amistad in its first game of the year on Monday, Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. Then on Dec. 21, the Hornets are hosting Southern Connecticut Conference rival East Haven for their home opener at 7 p.m.

Branford is competing in the SCC Quinnipiac Division with Guilford, Xavier, West Haven, and Law this season.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Branford-North Branford-Sheehan-Lyman Hall (B-NB-S-LH) girls’ ice hockey team picked up its first two wins of the season last week. The Wings improved to 2-1 on the year after notching their pair of victories in Southern Connecticut Conference action.

On Dec. 12, the Wings earned a 6-1 road win over Masuk-Barlow-Newtown-Lauralton Hall at The Rinks at Shelton. Three days later, B-NB-S-LH was back on the road to square off against Hamden at the Lou Astorino Ice Arena. The Wings edged out the Green Dragons by a 4-3 score in overtime to get their second win of the year.

This week, the Wings are hosting Hand-Coginchaug-Old Lyme at DiLungo Rink in East Haven at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 19, followed by a home game versus Simsbury on Saturday, Dec. 22 at 8 p.m.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

Branford started off a new season by hosting Glastonbury at Northford Ice Pavilion on Dec. 12. The Hornets took a 4-0 defeat against the Tomahawks in their first game of the campaign.

Branford is coming off a year that saw the team finish with an overall record of 13-7-1. The Hornets qualified for the Division II State Tournament, where they took a loss versus South Windsor in the first round.

In this week’s action, Branford is hosting Lyman Hall/Haddam-Killingworth-Coginchaug at Northford Ice Pavilion at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22, after which they will play at West Haven at Bennett Rink on Wednesday, Dec. 26 at 6:30 p.m.

Wrestling

Branford opened up its campaign by posting a victory versus Law, after which the Hornets delivered a runner-up performance at the Ludlowe Invitational.

Branford hosted Law for its first meet of the year and prevailed by a 48-33 score on Dec. 12. Then on Dec. 16, the Hornets were one of many teams that competed at the Ludlowe Invitational at Fairfield Ludlowe High School, where Branford came in second place by tallying a total of 172 points. Host Fairfield Ludlowe won the meet behind a score of 213 points.

Junior Cody McHenry took first place in the 195-pound weight class by winning a 9-2 decision in the championship bout at the invitational. Sophomore Markus Indeck finished in fourth place for Branford in the 195 division. Sophomore Peyton Tracy took second place in the 138-pound weight class, fellow sophomore Justin Osler finished second in the 182 division, and junior Minsok Lee came in second place for the 220-pound weight class. Freshman Josh Berdon placed third at 113 with fellow freshman Patrick Zdunek taking third place in the 120 division. Senior Quint Caruthers finished sixth in the 145-pound weight class for the Hornets.

Last winter, Branford posted a record of 16-13 during the regular season. The Hornets then finished in sixth place at the SCC Championship and 12th in the Class M State Championship.
