Rams Defeat the Huskies, 32-24

The Old Saybrook-Westbrook football team won its annual Thanksgiving Week matchup against divisional opponent Morgan by the final score of 32-24 at the Peters Complex on Nov. 21. With the win, Old Saybrook-Westbrook finished the 2018 season with an overall record of 6-4 that included a 5-2 mark in the Pequot Conference Sassacus Division. Morgan finished at 3-7 overall and went 2-6 in the division this year.

Senior Landis Twomey had 25 carries for 146 yards and a touchdown to lead the Rams’ offense. Fellow senior Devon Moshier scored a pair of touchdowns, including one on an 80-yard kickoff return, for Old Saybrook-Westbrook. Junior quarterback Jack McDowell connected with senior captain Dan Almada for a 37-yard touchdown pass in the victory. McDowell also ran 10 times for 66 yards and a TD. Senior Dan Almada added 25 yards on the ground, as well, for the Rams.

Defensively, Cooper Pavlovich led the Rams in tackles by making 13 in the game. Twomey added nine tackles, including four for a loss, to go with two sacks and a fumble recovery. McDowell also picked up a fumble that he returned 44 yards. Senior captain Luciano Duffy and junior Norman Root both forced a fumble for Old Saybrook-Westbrook. Almada and senior Max Thomas had eight tackles apiece. Juniors Will Bergeron and Ed Fernandes each made seven tackles in the contest.

The Rams were the first to get on the board with rushing touchdown by Devin Moshier and an extra point from Cooper Pavlovich to take a 7-0 lead as the first quarter drew to a close. They extended their lead to 14-0 in the second quarter on Almada’s 37-touchdown reception and another extra point by Pavlovich. Morgan scored a touchdown to cut it to 14-6, but the Rams came back with TD to make it 20-6 before the end of the first half.

In the third quarter, Morgan scored a touchdown and kicked a field goal to make the score 20-16. On the ensuing kickoff, Moshier broke off an 80-yard touchdown return to increase the Rams’ lead to 26-16 with less than 30 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Morgan scored another touchdown and then converted the 2-point conversion to make it a one-score game again. However, the Rams responded by scoring another touchdown and went on to get the 32-24 victory.
