The Guilford football team clinched its first winning season since 2000 by notching a victory versus Lyman Hall last week. The Indians hosted Lyman Hall for an SCC Tier 3 matchup on Nov. 14 and claimed a 24-19 win to improve to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in Tier 3 this year. Guilford held a 21-6 lead at halftime and then held off a second-half rally by the Trojans to emerge victorious.

Charles Schioppo carried the ball 15 times for 108 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Charles Walcott had 13 rushes for 65 yards, while Ethan Vashel gained 41 yards on nine carries for Guilford.

Lyman Hall grabbed a 6-0 advantage on a 28-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. The Indians responded with a 37-yard TD rush by Charles Schioppo to go ahead 7-6 with 7:09 left before halftime. Three minutes later, Schioppo came through again with a 30-yard scoring scamper to make it 14-6. Guilford then capped the opening half on a 3-yard touchdown run from Schioppo with 43 seconds remaining.

With 5:54 to go in the third, Lyman Hall (5-4, 1-4) struck on a 70-yard TD pass to cut the Guilford lead to 21-13. Following a Trojans’ turnover, Tyler Filley hit a 27-yard field goal to give the Indians some insurance with a 24-13 lead with 4:23 to play in the fourth. Lyman Hall scored on a 7-yard touchdown pass with 26.7 seconds to play in the game, but it was too little, too late, as the Indians recovered an onside kick to cement their first winning campaign in 18 years.

The Indians will finish the 2018 season with their annual Thanksgiving Eve game against rival Hand (9-0) on Wednesday, Nov. 21. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. at the Surf Club in Madison.
