Guilford Field Hockey Advances to State Semifinals

Field Hockey

The Guilford field hockey team claimed victory in a Class M State Tournament quarterfinal contest last week to advance into the semifinal round.

The 3rd-seeded Indians earned a first-round bye and then defeated No. 6 seed South Windsor by a 1-0 score in a quarterfinal home game on Nov. 8. Hannah Tillier scored the lone goal of the contest to help the Indians reach the state semis and improve to 17-2-1 overall.

Guilford, which recently won the SCC Tournament title, will face No. 7 seed Hand (13-5-2) in the Class M semifinals at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at Lyman Hall High School. The winner moves on to the final to play the winner of No. 8 Sacred Heart Academy (11-7-1) and No. 4 Avon (14-3) on Saturday, Nov. 17 at Wethersfield High School.

Volleyball

The Guilford volleyball squad won its first two games in the Class L State Tournament last week, after which the Indians dropped a 3-0 decision against Barlow in a quarterfinal match. Guilford posted an overall record of 20-6 this fall.

The 10th-seeded Indians swept No. 23 seed Lyman Hall by a 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-10) score in the first round of states at home on Nov. 5. Emma Appleman had 15 kills, eight digs, and three aces for Guilford, while Juliet Young added 13 digs and five aces. Sabrina Zuniga notched five kills, and Eva Ott Hill dished out 22 assists to go with two aces in the win.

On Nov. 8, Guilford prevailed by a 3-1 (25-18, 25-15, 20-25, 25-21) final in a second-round match at No. 7 seed Stratford.

Two days later, the Indians played at No. 2 seed Barlow in the quarterfinals and lost by the final score of 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-20).

Girls’ Soccer

The Indians saw their campaign come to a close in the opening in round of the Class L State Tournament last week.

No. 22 seed Guilford took a 3-1 loss at No. 11 seed Newington the first round of states on Nov. 5. The Indians finished with an overall record of 5-7-6 on the season.

Football

The Guilford football team improved its record to 5-3 on the year after recording another impressive victory last week. The Indians went on the road to face Bassick for an SCC Tier 3 matchup and prevailed by the score of 54-12 on Nov. 8. Guilford evened its record at 2-2 in SCC Tier 3 play with the win.

Guilford got out to an early lead, but Bassick (0-9, 0-5) was able to respond with a touchdown of its own to narrow the score to 7-6. However, Guilford struck back and responded with a quick score on an interception return for a touchdown by Ryan Eldridge. From there, the Indians never turned back and continued adding to their lead en route to taking a 40-6 advantage into halftime.

Charles Wolcott had six carries for 98 yards and three touchdowns for Guilford, while Charles Schioppo had 14 rushes for 104 yards and a score. Aiden McDermott threw his first varsity touchdown pass on an 18-yard connection to Shane Burns, who finished with 45 yards on two catches. On defense, Owen Nizolek returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown, and Joe Palmer also had an interception in the win.

“Overall, I was pleased with the win and the execution of the boys. We are still in pursuit of the elusive complete game in which offense, defense, and special teams are clicking on all cylinders at the same time,” said Head Coach Anthony Avallone. “We are focused on still trying to improve as we head into the final two weeks of our regular season. Traditionally, this is a time when we begin to take our foot off the gas and just get through Thanksgiving. If we want to continue to grow our program, we have to realize that this is a critical point in our season.”

The Indians will host SCC Tier 3 opponent Lyman Hall (5-3, 1-3) on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. After that, Guilford will face Hand in the teams’ annual Thanksgiving Eve game at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 21 at the Surf Club in Madison.
