Printer Friendly Version - Rams’ Football Gets 34-8 Win Over North Branford; Field Hockey, Boys’ Soccer Lose in Shoreline Semis

The Old Saybrook-Westbrook football (OS-W) football team earned a lopsided 34-8 home victory against North Branford in a Pequot Conference Sassacus Division contest on Nov. 3. Landis Twomey scored three touchdowns for the Rams, while Jack McDowell had a pair of TDs in the win. OS-W improved to 4-3 overall and 4-1 in the division with the victory.

The Rams struck first on a 15-yard touchdown run from McDowell in the first quarter. Fellow junior Cooper Pavlovich booted home the extra point to give OS-W a 7-0 lead. In the second quarter, North Branford (2-5, 1-5) struck back with a 5-yard touchdown run, and then took an 8-7 lead after a successful 2-point conversion.

Later in the quarter, McDowell punched it back into the end zone for the Rams on a 12-yard touchdown run. Pavlovich kicked another extra point for a 14-8 lead. Before the end of the first half, Landis Twomey scored a touchdown for OS-W on a 1-yard run and a 21-8 advantage following another extra point.

The Rams added another score in the third quarter on a 3-yard TD run by Twomey to make it 27-8. In the fourth quarter, Twomey scored the last TD of the day on a 4-yard run. Pavlovich kicked his fourth extra point for the 34-8 final.

Coming up next for the Rams will be a home game against divisional opponent Haddam-Killingworth (7-1, 5-1). Kickoff is set for noon on Saturday, Nov. 10 at Old Saybrook High School.

The Rams played top-seeded Westbrook in the semifinal round of the Shoreline Conference Tournament last week and took a 2-1 defeat in overtime against the Knights. Old Saybrook’s overall record on the season is now 10-6-1.

On Oct. 29, the 4th-seeded Rams headed to the Indian River Complex, where they faced off against the Knights. Old Saybrook went up 1-0 when senior captain Mandy Beck scored on a penalty corner on an assist by junior Izzy Sigersmith.

In the second half, Westbrook tied the score by netting a goal off a penalty corner, and the game eventually went to overtime. The Knights scored with 30 seconds left in the overtime period to come away with the 2-1 win.

Old Saybrook is competing in the Class S State Tournament this week. The Rams enter play as the No. 11 seed after going 10-5-1 in the regular season. Old Saybrook will face off against No 6 seed North Branford in the first round at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6. A win there would pit the Rams against the winner between 3rd-seeded Immaculate and No. 14 seed Weston in the quarterfinals at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8. The semifinals take place on either Tuesday, Nov. 13 or Wednesday, Nov. 14; and the championship game will be held at Wethersfield High School on Saturday, Nov. 17.

No. 4 seed Old Saybrook went up against top-seeded Morgan in the Shoreline Conference Tournament semifinals and lost a 2-1 contest versus the Huskies last week. The Rams now have a record of 11-4-3 on the season.

Senior Enes Cecunjanin gave Old Saybrook a 1-0 lead when he scored in the 19th minute on a deflection off of a free kick. Just one minute later, Morgan scored the equalizer to tie the game at 1-1. Then with 10 minutes left in the game, Morgan scored the go-ahead goal on its way to the 2-1 victory.

Next up for the Rams is the Class S State Tournament. No. 6 seed Old Saybrook, which went 10-3-3 on the regular season, earned a bye through the first round. The Rams will face the winner of 11th-seeded Wheeler and No. 22 seed Portland in the second round at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8. The quarterfinals are on Saturday, Nov. 10; the semis take place on either Tuesday, Nov. 13 or Wednesday, Nov. 14; and the championship game will be held on Saturday, Nov. 17.

Senior Shane Henderson and sophomore Jacob Schnieder competed for Old Saybrook at the State Open Championship that took place at Wickham Park in Manchester on Nov. 1.

Henderson finished in 13th place by running a time of 16 minutes and 35 seconds at the Open. Schneider crossed the finish line with a time of 18:25 to come in 136th place.

Henderson had previously finished in first place at both the Shoreline Conference Championship and the Class S State Championship with times of 16:41 and 16:36, respectively.

Freshman Caitlyn Wiley ran on behalf of the Rams at last week’s State Open Championship. Wiley finished in 121st place with a time of 22 minutes and 13 seconds at the meet.
