H-K Cross Country Represents at State Open; Volleyball Loses in Shoreline Semis

Girls’ Cross Country

The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ cross country squad qualified to compete as a team at State Open Championship last week. The Cougars finished in 14th place at the meet, which was held Wickham Park in Manchester on Nov. 1.

Emma Anziano posted a 14th-place finish by running a time of 19 minutes and 59 seconds at the Open. Also competing for H-K were Meara Bodak (55th, 21:21), Lauren D’Amico (79th, 22:00), Alison Twachtman (82nd, 22:02), Julia Callis (86th, 22:03), Brianna Minervino (122nd, 24:04), and Kylie Studzinski (128th, 25:02).

Boys’ Cross Country

Matt Jennings represented the H-K boys’ cross country team when he ran at last week’s State Open Championship. Jennings posted a time of 16 minutes and 43 seconds to finish in 24th place on behalf of the Cougars at Wickham Park on Nov. 1.

Volleyball

The Cougars’ volleyball team won their Shoreline Conference Tournament opener, before taking a defeat in the semifinals last week.

The 3rd-seeded Cougars defeated No. 6 seed Cromwell by a 3-1 score (25-11, 21-25, 25-22, 25-18) in a quarterfinal contest at home on Oct. 29. H-K then dropped a 3-2 decision at No. 2 seed East Hampton in the semifinal round on Oct. 30.

Next up for the Cougars, who are 16-5 overall, is the Class M State Tournament that begins on Monday, Nov. 5. No. 9 seed H-K will host No. 24 seed Lauralton Hall in a first-round matchup at 6 p.m.

Football

The Haddam-Killingworth football team improved to 7-1 on the season after earning a 42-0 road win over Lewis Mills in a Pequot Conference Sassacus Division game on Nov. 4. The Cougars also improved to 6-1 in the division with the victory.

H-K's Tobey Callender scored four touchdowns and rushed for 132 yards on 15 carries in the win versus Lewis Mills (0-8, 0-6). Dalton Modehn scored two touchdowns and ran for 138 yards on 12 carries to aid the Cougars' offense. Jordan Callahan went 6-for-6 kicking extra points for Head Coach Mike Baklik's squad.

"The kids played well today in all phases of the game and took care of business the way they needed to from the opening kickoff," said Baklik. "We challenge them to get better every week and, this week, we achieved our goal. Now, it's on to a new week."

The Cougars are now ranked ninth for the Class S State Playoff rankings, in which the top eight squads qualify. H-K next travels to Old Saybrook High School to face Sassacus Division rival Old Saybrook-Westbrook (4-3, 4-1) on Saturday, Nov. 10 at noon.
