Guilford Girls’ Cross Country Places 9th at State Open; Volleyball Loses in SCC Semis

Girls’ Cross Country

The Guilford girls’ cross country team competed as a unit at the State Open Championship last week. The Indians secured a ninth-place showing in the meet, which was held on Nov. 1 at Wickham Park in Manchester.

Meredith Bloss crossed the finish line with a time of 19 minutes and 34 seconds to finish in ninth place overall on behalf of Guilford. Clara Wiesler finished in 28th place (20:32), Gianna Siciliano placed 50th (21:13), and Olivia Skapczynski finished in 60th place (21:37) at the Open. Also for Guilford, Emma Bonz finished in 64th (21:39), Julia Antony finished in 100th place (22:36), and Alyssa Lent came in 116th place (23:25) at the meet.

Volleyball

Guilford earned a victory in the SCC Tournament quarterfinals, before taking a defeat in the semifinal round last week. The Indians are competing in states beginning this week.

The 4th-seeded Indians defeated No. 5 seed North Haven by a 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-18) score in an SCC quarterfinal home game on Oct. 30. Emma Appleman had 12 kills and eight digs, while Hunter Halbower added five kills and six blocks for Guilford. Juliet Young recorded 14 digs with four aces, and Eva Ott Hill handed out 21 assists to go with five digs and six aces in the win.

In the semifinals, the Indians took a 3-1 loss (19-25, 25-23, 17-25, 19-25) at No. 1 seed Cheshire in a rematch of last year’s SCC Tournament final on Nov. 1.

Next up for Guilford (18-5) is the Class L State Tournament, which begins on Monday, Nov. 5. The 10th-seeded Indians are hosting No. 23 Lyman Hall for a first-round contest at 6 p.m.

Football

Guilford took a hard-fought, 40-32 loss against Law on the road in an SCC Tier 3 matchup on Nov. 2. Guilford now stands at 4-2 overall with a record of 1-2 in SCC Tier 3 this year.

After the Indians fell behind 7-0 about three minutes into the game, Ethan Vashel found Miles Gabriel on a 5-yard TD pass, and Guilford trailed 7-6 after one quarter. Charles Schioppo gave Guilford a 13-7 lead on a 1-yard touchdown rush, after which the Lawmen (5-3, 3-1) took advantage of a Guilford turnover by scoring a TD to go up 14-13 with around three minutes to play until halftime. Two minutes later, Guilford regained the lead at 19-14 thanks to an 8-yard TD rush by Charles Walcott, who ran for 153 yards on the night.

A high-powered finish to the second half saw Law answer back on a long touchdown pass just 43 seconds later. Then with 31 seconds remaining before intermission, Vashel raced into the end zone from two yards away to put the Indians ahead 25-20 at the break.

Law scored on a 69-yard run on the first play of the third to regain the lead at 26-25. Law then scored another touchdown on an 81-yard rush to increase its lead to 33-25 with 8:45 to play in the period. The Lawmen ran for another TD with 1:11 left in the third and took a 40-25 advantage into the fourth on its way to the win.

Next up, the Indians will be back on the road to face SCC Tier 3 opponent Bassick (0-8, 0-4) on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The Indians competed at the SCC Championship last week and in finished 15th place at Southern Connecticut State University on Nov. 1.

Alex Mayo came in fourth place for the 200 individual medley by swimming a time of 2:12.34 at the SCC meet. Mayo also came in sixth place for the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:16.29.

Additionally, Guilford’s 400 freestyle relay of Brynn Leslie, Moriarity, Elizabeth Hicks, and Mayo finished 14th (4:00.86); the 200 medley relay of Leslie, Haley Moriarity, Audrey Rowan, and Julia Earle placed 15th (2:08.54); and the 200 freestyle relay of Rowan, Leslie, Earle, and Mayo took 15th place (1:51.48) in SCCs. Moriarity also finished 19th for the 100 freestyle (57.81) and came in 32nd place in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.23).

Boys’ Soccer

Last week, the Indians learned who their first opponent is in the Class L State Tournament. Guilford, which has a record of 8-6-3, is seeded 15th and will host No. 18 seed Torrington in the first round on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m.

Girls’ Soccer

Guilford recently found out who it is playing in the first round of the Class L State Tournament. The Indians, who have a record of 5-6-6, are the No. 22 seed and will travel to No. 11 seed Newington for a first-round game on Monday, Nov. 5 at 3:30 p.m.
