Gambardella and Bergin Turn in Sensational Showings at SCCs; North Haven Football Runs Past Foran, 50-15

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

Junior Angela Gambardella and sophomore Maddie Bergin each took first place in a pair of individual events and also swam on two victorious relays for the North Haven girls’ swimming and diving team at last week’s SCC Championship. Gambardella set a meet record in one of her victories to help the Indians come in fifth place as a team at Southern Connecticut State University on Nov. 1.

Gambardella finished first in both the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke at the SCC Championship, winning each event for the second year in a row at the meet. In the 200 IM, Gambardella swam a time of 2:06.63 to defeat runner-up Julia Stevens of Cheshire (2:10.75) by more than four seconds. Later in the meet, Gambardella finished the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:03.29 to not only beat out Lauralton Hall’s Caroline Krawec (1:06.18) for the win, but also break the SCC Championship record of 1:03.73 in the event.

Meanwhile, Bergin defended her SCC title in the 100 freestyle by swimming a time of 52.89 seconds to edge out Shelton’s Louise Kim (53.13) for the victory. Bergin also finished just ahead of Kim to take first place in the 50 freestyle. Bergin won the event in 23.99 seconds with Kim taking second place at 24.18.

In the 200 medley relay, North Haven’s quartet of freshman Brooke Nebor, Gambardella, sophomore Riley Jooss, and Bergin notched first place with a time of 1:49.72, beating out Cheshire (1:50.12) for top honors. Gambardella, Nebor, Jooss, and Bergin later joined forces to win the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:40.13, less than a second better than runner-up Shelton (1:40.97). North Haven’s 400 freestyle relay of freshmen Taya Laborde, Noelle Carmody, and Scarlett Vogel, and junior Kiresten Winter finished in 11th place behind a mark of 3:56.39.

Additionally at SCCs, Winter finished 13th in the 200 IM (2:19.72) and 14th in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.51) for the Indians. Jooss took 14th place in the 200 IM (2:20.20) and came in 22nd place for the 100 butterfly (1:03.71). Nebor finished the 100 backstroke in 1:04.60 to finish 14th, and she also placed 23rd in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:03.94.

Carmody took 16th place in both the 100 breaststroke (1:14.12) and the 50 freestyle (26.20) for North Haven. Laborde finished 17th in the 100 freestyle (57.46) and 27th in the 100 backstroke at 1:07.60. Vogel came in 18th place for the 50 freestyle (26.39), in addition to finishing 29th in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.19).

Junior Mackenzie Montesi swam a time of 5:33.95 to take 19th place in the 500 freestyle, along with finishing 28th in the 100 backstroke at 1:07.63. Sophomore Molly Coyle finished 26th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:26.74. In the 500 freestyle, freshman Giulia Faulkner finished 24th (5:42.14), while junior Gillian Regan finished in 32nd place (5:50.39).

Previously, North Haven had three athletes compete at the SCC Diving Championship at Sheehan on Oct. 27. Junior Ava Santacroce finished in second place with a total of 391.90 points for North Haven. Senior Isabella Alogna took 13th place (313.00), and junior Christina Stoeffler finished in 29th (230.00).

North Haven is competing in states this week. The Class M Diving State Championship will be held at Bulkeley High School at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7; the Class M Swimming Trials are at East Hartford at 5:55 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10; and the Class M Swimming State Championship takes place at Wesleyan University on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m.

Football

The North Haven football squad traveled to Milford to take on SCC Tier 2 opponent Foran on Nov. 2. The Indians claimed a 50-15 victory versus the Lions at Foran High School to improve their record to 7-1 on the season. North Haven is now ranked No. 4 in the Class L State Playoff rankings in which the top eight squads qualify.

As has been the case all season, the Indians used a balanced offensive attack to score points early and often in their convincing win over Foran (1-7). North Haven scored four touchdowns in the first quarter and two more in the second to take a 41-0 lead into halftime. Five different players scored TDs for Head Coach Anthony Sagnella’s team. Senior captain Devan Brockamer broke off two long touchdown runs and totaled 133 yards on just three carries on the night. Fellow senior Albert Hooks had a short TD run to go along with a kickoff return for a touchdown. All totaled, 12 players had at least one carry on offense to help North Haven rush for 363 yards in the victory.

Junior Corey Hooks brought home a 26-yard touchdown run just 1:50 into the game for North Haven. Three minutes later, Brockamer scored on a 48-yard run to help the Indians take a 14-0 advantage. A little more than a minute after that, junior Shamus Meehan ran for a 24-yard touchdown run, and North Haven had a 21-0 lead following an extra point by sophomore Chase DiCarlo. With 3:05 left in the first, senior captain Nick Dodge scored on a 5-yard run to make it 27-0 after one.

Just 1:20 into the second quarter, Albert Hooks plunged in for a 1-yard touchdown run for the Indians. With 2:50 to go before the half, Brockamer scored his second TD of the game by reeling off a 63-yard touchdown run. DiCarlo kicked his fifth extra point of the half to give the Indians a 41-0 advantage at intermission.

Midway through the third quarter, Foran used a 10-yard TD run and 2-point conversion pass to make the score 41-8. However, Albert Hooks returned the ensuing kickoff all the way for a 75-yard touchdown and a 47-8 lead through three.

DiCarlo booted a 33-yard field goal to extend the lead to 50-8 with 8:24 remaining in the game. The Lions scored last touchdown on a 45-yard run to make the final score 50-15.

Albert Hooks had four carries for 60 yards, Corey Hooks gained 33 yards on two carries, and Meehan ran three times for 36 yards in North Haven’s win against Foran. Meehan also completed a 15-yard pass to Brockamer in the win.

On defense, Corey Hooks and fellow junior Noah Perillie each grabbed an interception for the Indians. Senior Darren Major made 11 tackles, junior Jeff Williston had nine tackles, and Perillie added eight tackles.

This week, North Haven will be back on the road to face Fairfield Prep in a battle between two SCC Tier 1 heavyweights. The game takes place at Rafferty Stadium at Fairfield University at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9. Fairfield Prep has an overall record of 7-1 and is 3-1 in SCC Tier 1 games. The Indians are also 3-1 in SCC Tier 1 action this season.

Volleyball

North Haven took a loss to Guilford in the quarterfinals of the SCC Tournament last week and is playing in the Class L State Tournament that gets underway this week.

No. 5 seed North Haven played at No. 4 Guilford in the SCC Tournament quarterfinals and lost by a 3-0 final on Oct. 30. Guilford won the match with scores of 25-20, 25-12, 25-18 to advance to semifinals, where it lost to Cheshire. Senior Giselle Zumerchik had 12 kills with 11 digs, while fellow senior Peyton Davis posted eight kills, six digs, and three aces for the Indians in the loss.

North Haven, which finished 14-4 for the regular season and is 15-5 overall, enters the Class L State Tournament as the No. 11 seed. The Indians will host No. 22 Hand seed in the first round of states at 6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 5. If North Haven wins, it will play a second-round match at No. 6 Kennedy (17-3) at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8. The quarterfinals take place on Saturday, Nov. 10; the semifinals are on Wednesday, Nov. 14; and the final will be held at East Haven High School at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17.

Boys’ Soccer

North Haven is competing in the Class L State Tournament as the No. 19 seed this week. The Indians, who went 8-6-2 during the regular season, are playing at No. 14 seed Crosby in a first-round game at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6. If North Haven wins, it will play at No. 3 seed Hand (12-2-3) in the second round at the Surf Club in Madison at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8. The quarterfinals are on Saturday, Nov. 10; the semis take place on either Tuesday, Nov. 13 or Wednesday, Nov. 14; and the championship game will be held on Saturday, Nov. 17.
