The North Haven football team improved to 6-1 on the season by defeating Xavier 49-14 in an SCC Tier 1 contest at Vanacore Field on Oct. 26. The Indians, who saw six different players find the end zone in the game, also moved to 3-1 in SCC Tier 1 play with the victory.
North Haven scored a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter and then added two more TDs in the second quarter to stake itself to a 28-0 halftime advantage versus Xavier (1-6, 0-4). The Indians took an early lead when senior captain Nick Dodge ran for a 38-yard touchdown with 6:22 to play in the opening frame. Junior Chase DiCarlo kicked the extra point to make it 7-0. With 3:41 remaining in the quarter, Shamus Meehan found fellow senior captain Devan Brockamer on 60-yard touchdown pass and North Haven held a 14-0 lead after one.
About two minutes into the second quarter, the Indians went on a drive that finished with a 19-yard TD run by senior Albert Hooks. With six minutes to play before halftime, junior Corey Hooks ran for a touchdown from 41 yards away for North Haven. DiCarlo’s extra point made the score 28-0 at halftime.
Brockamer returned the opening kickoff of the second half 97 yards to the house for a North Haven touchdown. About five minutes later, Meehan scored on a 19-yard TD rush to give the Indians a 42-0 lead following another DiCarlo extra point. Xavier got on the board with a 35-yard TD pass and later scored on an 8-yard touchdown pass to make it 42-14. Senior Noah Pastore scored the last touchdown of the night on a 26-yard run with 1:06 to play in he third. DiCarlo kicked his seventh extra point in as many attempts for the 49-14 final.
Dodge had two rushes for 57 yards, Pastore carried the ball five times for 50 yards, Corey Hooks ran four times for 49 yards, Albert Hooks had three runs for 46 yards, and Meehan picked up 38 yards on three carries for the Indians in the victory.
North Haven’s next game will take place at SCC Tier 2 opponent Foran (1-6) on Friday, Nov. 2. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Foran High School in Milford. The Indians are ranked No. 4 in the Class L State Playoff rankings in which the top eight teams qualify.
Volleyball
After finishing their regular season with a win versus Mercy, the Indians began the postseason by notching a victory over West Haven in the first round of the SCC Tournament last week.
North Haven hosted Mercy for its regular-season finale on Oct. 22 and claimed a 3-0 (25-10, 25-11, 25-15) win on Senior Night. Senior Giselle Zumerchik had 10 kills with five digs and four aces, Sam Burke contributed five kills and six aces, and fellow senior Peyton Davis produced six kills and five aces for the Indians, who went 14-4 for the regular season.
Then on Oct. 26, North Haven opened the SCC Tournament as the No. 5 seed and earned a 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-18) home win over No. 12 seed West Haven in a first-round match. Zumerchik had 10 kills and six digs, Davis posted six kills, one ace, and three digs; and senior Carly Brown had six digs and seven aces for North Haven.
The Indians, who are 15-4 overall, will play at No. 4 seed Guilford in the SCC Tournament quarterfinals at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30. With a win, North Haven would face the winner of No. 1 Cheshire and No. 9 Lyman Hall in the SCC semis on Thursday, Nov. 1. The SCC final takes place at East Haven High School at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3. After SCCs, Head Coach Brianna Kleckner’s squad will compete in the Class L State Tournament that begins on Monday, Nov. 5.
Girls’ Swimming and Diving
The Indians saw three divers compete at the SCC Diving Championship that took place at Sheehan High School on Oct. 27.
Junior Ava Santacroce recorded a score of 391.90 points for her 11-dive performance to take second place and earn All-SCC honors on behalf of North Haven. Senior Isabella Alogna finished in 13th place with a score of 313.00, while junior Christina Stoeffler finished in 29th by totaling a score of 230.00 at the meet. North Haven’s divers combined to post the fifth-highest point total of the 12 teams that were represented at the SCC Diving Championship.
The Indians will next be competing in the swimming portion of the SCC Championship that will take place at Southern Connecticut State University at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1. After that, the Indians will compete in states, beginning with the Class M Diving State Championship at Bulkeley High School at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7. The Class M Swimming Trials are at East Hartford at 5:55 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10, and the Class M Swimming State Championship takes place at Wesleyan University on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m.
Field Hockey
North Haven finished off the 2018 season by earning wins against Shelton in its final two games of the campaign.
After taking a 6-0 loss at Sacred Heart Academy on Oct. 22, the Indians won both ends of a home-and-home series versus Shelton to wrap up their year. On Oct. 24, North Haven hosted Shelton and posted a 2-1 victory versus the Gaels on Senior Night. Seniors Lindsey Rowland and Jackie Howlett netted the goals to help Head Coach Kim Bouffard’s squad come away with the win.
The following day, North Haven faced Shelton on the road and recorded a 3-0 shutout. The Indians finished the season with a record of 2-13-1.
Girls’ Soccer
The Indians concluded their campaign by earning a 1-0 win over Old Saybrook last week. North Haven finished with a record of 4-10-2 on the year.
North Haven started last week by taking a 6-1 loss at Lauralton Hall on Oct. 22. Three nights later, the Indians hosted non-conference opponent Old Saybrook at North Haven Middle School. Head Coach Jeff Knuth’s club notched a 1-0 victory over the Rams in its regular-season finale to finish the year on a positive note.
Boys’ Soccer
North Haven earned a tie and took a loss during the final week of its regular season. The Indians finished with a record of 8-6-2 for regular-season play and now get ready to compete in the Class L State Tournament.
North Haven started off last week by playing non-conference opponent Valley Regional to a 1-1 tie on the road on Oct. 22. Two days later, the Indians were on the road to face Hand and lost a 1-0 contest in their regular-season finale.
The Indians are competing in the Class L State Tournament that gets underway on Tuesday, Nov. 6.
Boys’ Cross Country
Senior Jack Opramolla recorded a 38th-place finish for North Haven at the Class MM State Championship at Wickham Park in Manchester on Oct. 26. The Indians finished in 14th place out of 24 teams in the meet.
Opramolla ran a time of 18 minutes and 3 seconds to finish 38th in a field of 171 runners for the 5K race at the state meet. Freshman Jake Hines came in 54th place by running a time of 18:23. Fellow freshman Mike Rubano finished in 80th place with a time of 19:06, senior Jackson Frank took 97th place at 19:43, and sophomore Nick Howlett finished 98th with that same time of 19:43. Junior Aidan Bergin finished in 108th (19:55), while sophomore Aaron Barbiero placed 119th (20:21) for the Indians.
Girls’ Cross Country
Junior Reagan Forbes came in 43rd place for the Indians at last week’s Class MM State Championship. North Haven finished in 17th place out of 21 teams in the meet.
Forbes crossed the finish line with a time of 22:05 to finish 43rd in a competition that featured 150 runners. Senior Shannon Reilly finished in 110th place (25:08), freshman Riley Minns placed 111th (25:18), senior Madeline Libero finished 122nd (26:46), and senior Lily Corcoran came in 142nd place (30:21) for North Haven.
